A book FOXFIRE ONE has a chapter on plantin' by the signs. Best explanation I've seen. Also a good chapter on Faith Healin'. We always plant in the right signs....Casteratein' animals is best done in the right signs, casterate when the signs are in the feet.

Some old timers also say that the phase of the moon will affect how much dirt is left after digging postholes or a grave.. I never dug any graves, but I have noticed that in digging postholes, sometimes there is a lot of dirt left over, but sometimes, very little...

The time from full moon to new moon is considered the dark of the moon. The period from new moon to full moon is called the light of the moon.Plant underground crops ( carrots, beets, potatoes etc. in the dark of the moon.Plant above ground crops(cabbage, beans, tomatoes etc) in the light of the moon.

I had heard you should not wean calves with a full moon. A lot of truth to it, simply because its light out a night during a full moon and the calves stay awake bawling all night.

A bit young here so can you explain how you follow the moons phases and correspond the planting and calving to it. Thanks!

JoeBob,

If you can find one, you might want to buy a copy of the Old Farmer's Almanac. They sell them in most bookstores, lots of truck stops, and every Cracker Barrel restaurant. They tell you more than you would ever want to know about the phases of the moon and their relationship to everyday events.

Plus the almanac is just a fun read.

I have read the almanac before but would like the logic behind the reason.

Well the way I understand it is this. Right now isn't the time to plant because the moon is getting smaller in the sky. Or in other words you want to plant after the new moon and before it gets to be full. After a full moon you don't want to plant till you get the next new moon. Same thing goes for if you cut yopur hair. If you want it to grow back out well cut it before the full moon if you want it to grow slow cut if after the full moon. Hope that explains it to you if not ask more questions

My wife being from Arkansas says that's the only way to plant and get a good crop. I came out of California we just waited for a nice day.
