was replacin hydraulic hoses on the back hoe in the barn today, seen a critter come running along the wall. thought it was a rat at first, then it came by again. about a foot long, slender body, about as round as a bratwurst, short tail, slightly bushy, white in color except has black around its eyes like a racoon, short legs, ran pretty quick. looked like a weasel but smaller and the wrong color. north central llinois. some kind of weasel or ferret?? never seen one like it before. any body know what it is???

When I was a kid (70's & 80's), they said the black-footed ferret had gone extinct, but we had something around the farm that sure looked like one of these:

We then found a small skull out in the equipment row with carnivore teeth and the raccoon mask of black fur still stuck to the face and then didn't see anymore around, but come to find out, there were still others around in other areas.

Probably a small chance that's what is in your barn, but if it is, they are quite rare!

Sounds like a lawyer to me (sub-species of weasel). Now, John, remain calm. That was a joke, son. Put the gun down.

Sounds like the ferret that one of our past renters had. She never took care of the poor thing either so it's cage stunk really bad. She was too busy working the brass pole any ways....

But anyway, this one was a yellowy white w/ the mask like you describe. That'd be my bet.

Freind of mine had 2 Ferrets you could smell them when you walked in the house . And he would keep them clean. You did not want to see Bubba on the brass Pole . Ken B

You sure described an ermine to me. It is just a weasel after some cold weather and snow. One year it snowed early, then warmed up for deer season and my brother, Dad and I watched one for 15-20 minutes or so. Pretty neat little creatures. I think the ermine phase pelts are pretty valuable, but I wouldn't grab him with bare hands.

sounds like a ferrat to me. If so they are good to have in barn as they kill rats and mice.

Lots of unusual "pets" being sold these days; sometimes they get out of the house and head for cover, or when people get tired of them or they get inconvenient (or people feel they"re "freeing" them), people turn "em loose in farm country.

Sure sounds like a weasel with his winter clothes on to me. Did his coat have a faint tinge of yellow to it?

now that you mention it, could have had a tinge of yellow, i thought the critter may have been a little dusty from the dirt floor. looked like a minature version of a weasel. the weasels we used to get in the chicken house were brown and a lot bigger.this one had the weasel face, but the black mask around the eyes kinda threw me. i gotta start carrying a camera in my pocket.

There are weasels up north that turn white in the winter. Ermine I think they call them. Never saw one this far south. Maybe someones lost ferret? They come in a lot of light colors these days.
