I found a rear rim for my VAC a couple states away. What would be the best way to get it shipped? Would UPS or other package shippers handle it?

I drove for FedEx Home Delivery for almost 2 years. You would be surprised by what all someone can ship now adays. FedEx just had an additional charge for over sized/heavy items. I had 3 super huge mudder tires on one day-no box, by the way. Man was he mad that I had only 3-sure enough, the 4th one came the next day. Then I had 5 wide white walls-couldn't figure why 5? Come to find out he was restoring a pickup, and needed one for the spare, since it showed! Greg

I've had a rim shipped to me her in florida from a buddy in ca. He just slapped the shipping label on it and sent it ups.

I have also had buddies ship heavy parts by bus.. station to station.

I shipped one via Greyhound. If they have the space in the luggage compartment, they'll ship it to the Greyhound station nearest to it's ultimate destination VERY reasonably. Less than half the cost via the normal carriers, IIRC.

I have shipped both 24 and 28 inch rims by way of UPS. I'm lucky the place does both DHL and UPS and almost all the time UPS is cheaper. I don't use a box for rims since they are big they just tape the label right on the inside of the rim

I shipped some hitch parts thru UPS without a box. I bolted them (angle irons, basically) together and put the address on a taped-on label and also used a paint-ball marker to put the addy right on the parts. Stuff like this is called 'irregulars' in the UPS system.

A couple of weeks ago I shipped a 16" plow wheel to a shop for repair. It is a spoked wheel. I took it to UPS hoping they would allow me to just attach a tag. They told me that they don't do that, and it had to be in a box. Then the clerk found a box for me, helped me tape it up and labeled it for me. Service was outstanding, but wouldn't allow it to be shipped without a box. You may have a different experience. BTW, I am expecting my repaired wheel back any day. I am restoring a MM plow that was my granddad's. I'll have $1000 in a $200 plow. I think he would call me an idiot, but I will be proud of it an I think he would be too.

Nahh, they don't require a box. the clerk must have been new, but hey, that was nice of them to help you and they saved you the $6 surcharge for "non-standard" package. I send a lot of non'boxed items. Sometimes I build a small wooden platform. I just tape sharp edges and tape the label on well. They will take up to 150 pounds now.

I purchased a front axle for my 340 from JP Tractor (recycled tractor parts) in MO and they shipped it to me via UPS in NJ. I think it weighed close to 80 pounds. Didn"t package it - just wired a tag onto it. You may wish to call them for particulars, but they do it all the time. Their website is just their name, without spaces.com

I have had some experience with item under 140.My item was shipped ups ground. It cost me about a little over a dollar a pound. If it weighs over that you need to find a trucking firm that is closest to your wheel on one end and a receiving company closest to you on your end.I used ABF freight. You need what they call a certificate of laden from the trucking firm before they leave with the wheel. For some reason without it it will cost a significant difference higher. You have to make sure whatever packaging the wheel is put in stays in one piece.I almost did not receive a hydraulic cylinder because all the packaging was almost destroyed. There would be no way of knowing where to send the package.
