Well, geting pretty close to planting season, couple months, and I am wondering what some of you guys suggest for min tillage. I did apply 5 acres of chicken manure so I guess I will disc that heavy to incorperate and mix good with the soil so I dont burn my sweet corn. But the remainder of the 25 feild will be feild corn, some oats, and possible some soybeans. It was no tilled beans by the renter last spring. Didnt seem to have good germination. I want to conserve residue as much as possible , but feel the soil could use a little softening up. Corn will be planted with a 456 IH planter this year, dont know if that would even work if I did try no till with it. I am thinking feild cultivator 4-5" deep, or disc it. Any recommendations or othe neat lettle tillage tools out there for smaller scale plots/ tractors?

Not going to say much about tillage but if you are going to plant sweet corn and field corn in the same field make sure you allow enough isolation (either by distance or maturity) so the sweet corn doesn't get pollinated by the field corn. The genetics of sweet corn are changing every year and if you are growing anything but the old su type cross pollination with field corn can sure be a waste of money on newer sweet corn genetics. Also sweet corn requires shallower planting, better seedbed, and warmer soil usually. With a good notil planter set up right good stands of sweetcorn can be achieved.

It's a tough call without being able to actually look at the soil and walk across it. My guess is that since it was beans last year, you should be good to go with a couple of deep diskings, as deep as the disk as will go. I don't think your IH 456 planter is capable of complete no-till.

Ya thats what I was thinking about the 456. Hoping to pick up a JD 7000 to convert over the next 12 months to No-Till,( for future enrollment in EQIP. The sweetcorn will be approx 1/8 mile from any feild corn.

1/8 mile should give you enough isolation, especially if you heed prevailing wind directions. You still have to be careful not to mix up the different sweetcorn genetics. Keep sugar enhanced (se) and the old sugary (su) varieties isolated from any supersweets (Sh2). Crossing between either with Sh2 will ruin the flavor of all the sweet corn.
