serial number on gun?

hey everybody, I just turned 18, and got my license to carry a conceled firearm... but the only hand gun I own right now is a S&W 38. it's an old double action revolver.. not sure of the model is though.. anyhow, my grampa said not too take it off the property becouse he bought it way back when for very little money, and is afraid it might have been used in some crime.. so I don't want to be carrying the thing around if thats the case.. so I want to know if there is some way I can look up the srial nuber on the gun too check that.. or could I just take it too the local cop? any idea? thanks a lot..

Farmer Blue, here is where you start the rest of your life. It's full of decisions. Some hard some easy. All of these choices will build your character. First your grandpa told you not to take it off his property. Do you want to risk losing his trust? Second, You don't know if the weapon is stolen or not. Now there are multiple options. do you leave it on your grandpas property and forget it. Do you take it to the police to have the serial number checked through NCIC? Do you lie and just take the Sn# to the police and say your "thinking" of purchasing a weapon with this Sn#. If you do have the Sn# checked and it comes back clear then you would need to talk to your grandpa about carrying it. And take it to a weapon specialist/ armorer to see if it is structurally and mechanically sound to carry. If it came back with a criminal history you would be required to turn it over to the police if it were evidence in a case. Personally I would rather have a clear conscious one way or the other. If it came back dirty I would rather turn a weapon over to the police to solve a crime and purchase a new one than have it in the back of my mind the rest of my life "what if I get caught with it." Once you start carrying a weapon there is a infinite number of choices, decisions, responsibilities both moral and ethical. Killing a animal is nothing like killing a person. I'm not telling you what to do. Just giving you some things to think about. If your thinking about police work as a career check with someone in the local P.D. and do a ride along if the let you. As for checking the Sn# I don't know of any way to check it without going through the local authorities. They are the only ones with access to NCIC or your local data base. One last thought. If you pull a weapon to kill someone weather you fire or not. You have (less than 1/4 of a second) to decide weather you are going to kill them or not and do it. The jury will have (weeks and weeks) to pick apart what you did and why you did it.

It is simple, FOLLOW GRANDPA'S ADVICE! Don't take it or the serial to the cops. You're only inviting trouble if it does have a shady past. Buy yourself a good safe firearm from a legal legitemate source, register it properly,if you are bent on carrying. If you took a CCW course, they probably stressed the responsibility of carrying. If you ever drop the hammer on someone, even if you are in the right, and can convince a jury of that, you're still in for the ride of your life. Then comes his family, sewing you in civil court. It never ends.....

OK, I"m gonna chime in here. First of all I dont know where you live but I find it very hard to believe that a county sherrif is handing out CCP"s to an 18 year old. If they are, Good for you. Now, I have had one for years and as life would have it is was needed for one reason or another. Next, just think about the outcome of you carrin that gun when your out and about. If you think you need to carry that gun just for fun forget about it. If you pull a gun on another humanbeing you better be prepaired to pull that trigger and put them in the ground. Not an easy thing to do. Just like hunting with a rifle or a shot gun, Responcibity and common sence is key.
Now, as for taking it to the local law inforcement I wouldnt do it. If it has been in your Grandpas possesion for that long it couldnt have been used in a crime. Unless he used it. Regardless, the police would have a hard time tracking it down unless someone reported it stolen and gave them the #"s.

I got my first gum when i was 12 a 22 single shot rifle. I got my first pistol at 19 a 22 6 shot revolver. pretty little thing in Nichol plate. I carried all over the place in a holster on my hip, that legal way back then. I never go into trouble with the law never shot anyone except myself (long story don't learn how to fast draw). I wonder though why you need a permit to carry it concealed do you carry a lot of money or have ajob that needs to have protection or are you just doing it because you can do it. If the latter I suggest leaving it at home. these days are not the same as when i was a kid and you can get into some serious trouble carring agun without knowing proper use of it and at 18 I doubt that you have that.
Anyway don't give up on shooting its a great sport just do it in safe place and with all the safety things in place. There in nothing like having a shooting with some friends to see who is the best shot but it has to be safe at all times. Walt

Your first mistake is not to listen to your grandpa and have stopped prior to even sending this letter. Your grandpa may or may not be the smartest man in the world, but he has survived long enough to be your grandpa. I can not believe that nobody even raised the issue of respecting your elders instruction regarding his property, he may have given you the reason just so you would not take it to town and get yourself killed with it figuring that you would not listen if he just told you not to take it to town. The worst advice I saw was to lie to the police and say you are looking at a gun you actually have. If they press you for where you are looking at it and the truth comes out that you have it your credibility will be damaged. There are many opportunities available to young people these days that disappear rather quickly when they get in trouble with guns or drugs. If your life is so bad that you think you must carry a concealed gun at age 18 you might need to be asking question on how to legitimize your life and not your grandpa's gun.

So your grampa bought it 10 years ago and he didn't know what he was buying. So you get it and somebody finds you with it and then it was used in a crime somewhere and you get dragged into it. Why you wouldn't check it out with the proper authorities first I have no idea. Do it the right way or don't do it at all. After all, it's just an old gun with very little value I would guess. Best bit of advice is from one of the guys down below that said to throw rocks. Handguns are a problem regardless of what all the experts here say.

Any relatively large Police Dept. can run a check. If it is more than 20 years old probably not likely to be on any data base if it is stolen. Do your self a favor don't carry it.

the way i see it you have two choices. 1st, dont say anything, hide the gun and never touch it again. downside is if you ever get caught with it, and its a hot gun, you're going to jail, and you have a felony record for possesion of a stolen weapon, you'll have anywhere from 5 to say 10 grand in legal bills. option 2. go see your local gunsmith or county sherriff, tell them your grandad is giving you an old revolver that he got used from a guy years ago and to be on the safe side, you want to be sure its not stolen. they can run the serial number, if its not stolen, then have it checked out by a gunsmith and use it for target practice. if it is stolen, you will have to surrender the gun, you will be out what grandad paid for it, butttt..... you will be able to sleep at night. if you go before a judge with permit to carry concealed, and then get pinched with a hot gun, they will lock you up and throw away the key!

Just log on to the Smith & Wesson forum...ask the guys there. The serial number should be on the butt, or in the crane area of the pistol and read like K1234567 and later years will have the model number, "MOD-14-3", etc.
DO NOT take it to the police because they probably don't have the serial no. "registered" anyway. They'll just steal it from you.
Keep it on the farm and shoot the heck out of it!!

If he has a carry permitt, he has already had two or three days training.....

If you are afraid to handle a hand gun, then get a training course....they are great fun if you under stand how to use them.....

You have got advice on here from some guys that dont know what they are talking about....
If you are afraid and dont under stand guns....get training or leave them alone ....but dont be giving advice about something you dont know about.....

Now if the serial number is not on the side of the gun or on the but.....if the cylinder swings out to load, look inside on the frame.....

If the cylinder does not swing open ....pull ejector rod under barrel out a couple inches cylinder should fall out....number under cyl.....

Take this gun to a gun smith and have it checked out before shooting....what gun did you use for your traning?

This old gun is not a good gun for carry.....look around and read gun mags. for best advice.....

Any of them is to heavy at the end of the day....belt and holster is the most confortable.....

An 18 year old, with a questionable handgun, and two or three days of training. Dang, I think he could be one of our deputy's!!!

Telling him to be cautious, get training and keep the gun on the farm is not being afraid or untrained.

Been on the farm and having shot every thing there was since 1954.. Class 3 NFA, Handloaded, cast my own bullets, do you know how to mesure headspace? No there are gun people on here, we just know that at 18, in this day and age,with a handgun you just need to stay on the farm and not risk running afoul with all the Barney Fifes' out there.

It's the cops we need to fear. That is why the founding fathers of this country did not want a large free standing police force!!!

Blue boy, If you THINK you'd like to carry a gun and do a little shooting I would suggest you join the Army. There's an excellant chance you could get an all expense paid trip to a very large and looks to be a long shooting spree going on in Iraq. But DON'T go to police. Don't check the serial number and don't carry a weapon. Most people would be okay with one 99% of the time. It's that 1% that cost you money for lawyers and jail time and a lot of heartache. There are bound to be people that love you and would miss you. At the very least on holidays, Christmas and what would have been your next birthday. Hell go paint a tractor..... ..Forget the gun. hi farmer , DO NOT take the gun to the cops And do not cut it up find the serial and write it down the goto the cops with the # written on paper tell them you found a gun you are interested in from an individual but before you buy you want to make sure the gun is leagel and not stolen . i have bought alot of things real cheap because someone needed the money that were legit just because it was bought cheap dosn't mean it was stolen , fwiw mike

I always been told that likely anybody you would need to use a pistol on, will have likely used one on you first, so I never bothered with the hassles of owning one. A laser on an 1100 Remington and a loud mouthed dog with good ears however is a different story. A handgun just ain't worth it.

i say there should be a websight with gun model and serial numbers of stolen guns. it would help gun owners and cops. as it is now,if you buy a gun , you ant ask the cops without chance of getting in trouble.if its stolen,ignorance of it will not get you out of it.lucas

Don't cut that old S&W up just put it up. Some of them have a good collector value. I have a 1917 model chambered for 45 acp that belonged to my grandfather it is the only thing that survived the house fire that killed him. I would not take 10 grand for it.

If you have the serial no checked by any police dept and it shows up as a stolen firearm you will have to surrender it to them. It would be hard to pin a serial no to a crime unless the owner had it registered in their name and was suspect in a crime. Any way you look at it if you are suspect the gun is not legal to posess I would stay away from it. One firearm felony could stop your firearms rights dead in their tracks. Also, A firearm with filed off serial numbers in most states will be a conviction of possession of a stolen firearm regardless.

Leave the guns alone or you are liable to end up in the state pen before you hit 19. If you can't handle a difficulity with your hands, stay out of the scrap.

I would let well enough along. Since when can 18 year olds carry a pistol. You use to have to be 21 for pistols. You could however have a shotgun or rifle. Here you can't even buy 22 shells if you tell the clerk it is for a pistol and under 21.

Leave the gun at home! Take a firearms or hunter safety course. Even though you think you know how to handle a gun, you will learn much from a properly run safety course.

I too didn't think 18 year old could have a handgun, some states may have an exemption for farmers, but I am not sure.

Do not mess with the cops. dont show them the gun. I will take my chances with the criminals over some of the cops we have now days.

A friend of mine once told me never to get in a scrap with something I didn't want shoved up my you know where. It has been good advise.
