hey now! them's pretty. sure looked like daffydils to me but i can see the difference in the foliage. our daffys are startin' to pop. iris are about 6 to 8 inches tall and the day lilies are comin' up. hang in there all you snowbirds...it's comin' up your way next.

Well sometimes things like that do happen. I think if the late Phil had lived he would have been nominated for the metorologist award.

The ice is breaking up on the squishy roads, but we need to go through it to get to the firm stuff. Sure feel for you guys on the hay shortage. To bad fuel is so high to ship hay out there. Looks like we'll have a 100 ton leftover. We have found we could stretch our hay and corn with using dry gluten pellets. Delivered in for $90/ton. 18% protein and energy equal to corn. Much cheaper than feeding distillers from an ethanol plant only 15 miles away. Feed yards are almost all cleaned down to the ceent and new calves on the ground. So yes spring is a comin

Dan

Just wondering cause I don't know.

Why are gluten pellets at 90 a ton cheaper to feed then cake gluten from the plant at $25 a ton?

Is it because of the lower water content?

I know in the summer the cake will not keep very long.

Explain a little please.

Gary

I heard my first frog or spring peeper or whatever you call them last night. He sounded lonesome, but was doin his "springsacomin" thing none the less. Hope he doesn"t have to look through the ice too many more times.

We did some serious melting here yesterday.

So we will have this mud thing to contend with here.

Mud everywhere cause of the half froze ground when we got the ice a couple of weeks ago. It all soak into the top 2or3 inches of dirt so now that is soup.

But we have to have the mud to get to spring.

Noticed the grass starting to green up day 'fore yesterday.

Got a ways to go, but I think we've sure turned the corner. :>)

I'm in a real "stretch the hay" mode here. Really pushing the grain at 'em 'cause the cheapest hay I can find is $100 a ton and my conscience is "balking" at that price. :>(

yep allan...and as i'm sitting here reading about how happy some people seem to be about the climbing fuel prices, i'm also thinking about how much extra we'll be charging for our hay this season to off-set those fuel costs. it's a good thing beef prices ARE going up...that way maybe we'll all "break even"...unless we have another bad growing year. all it's gonna take is another hay shortage.

I've got my fingers crossed hopin for lots of rain and hay.

Gonna try it one more season and if it droughts out again, we might be all wheat on this place the following year.

The critters sure look good in the plus column, but they have to eat too. :>(

yup...simple economics the way i see it. if it costs more to feed 'em...that cost cuts into the sales profit margin so you actually don't make a dime more. higher fuel costs make EVERYTHING cost more. so it don't matter if you're getting more for your product, if it costs more to produce it. econimics 101. simple

Heck,

My little pee brain hasn't even got that far down the road yet.

I'm just tryin' to keep the little darlin's alive 'til grass season without having to drop two grand on a darned load of hay. :>(

During those cold days, they were nothin' less than flat out inhalin' the stuff.

...ya, and we sold the last bale we could spare the end of january! still gettin' calls for the stuff. been in the 60's and 70's here this past week. hopefully the grass is growin', but we haven't put any cows on pasture yet, so we're still feedin'. if everybody starts cuttin' their herds or sellin' out, we may have LOTS of hay left over this time next year if there's no one to sell it to.
