I was watching RFDTV and reading the paper this a.m. All the talk about the amount of corn that is predicted to be planted this spring, I am wondering what are you plans for crops this year. I was planning 3 acres of sweetcorn, 15 acres of corn, 5 acres of oats, and maybe 5 acres of beans. This is all the acreage I am doing this year as its my first year running anything other than 2 acres of sweetcorn, all profits will go into increasing acreage next year, so I am really questioning- is corn the best or should I go more with the small grain ,thinking there may be a shortage(less inputs!. How bout you??

Our row crop acres this year will be about 70% corn, that will put us at about 1,400 acres of corn which is about as much as we feel comfortable planting with a 12 row planter. We are also increasing our hay acres, I won't be sirprised if hay prices are up 20-30% a year from now but even with current hay prices I think it would take $5 corn to be more profitable than hay.

We plant as much corn as we can and keep the landlords happy. This year we will only have 90 acres of Soybeans, 395 of corn with 50 of that going to silage and the first 30,000 bushel to high moisture corn. We will also have 130 acres of oats and hay that will all be baled. Not ny changes from our norm. But I sure will have options in place for 75% of any grain sales. Gambling is for Vegas we have to manage our risk as well as te weeds

Flour corn, green beans, tomatoes (40 varieties), eggplant, peppers, greens, radishes, muskmelon, winter squash, cukes, zukes, potatoes, cauliflower, the usual.

1500 walnuts planted in late December

Seedlings:

410 black cherry
300 red oak
200 white cedar
30 black elderberry
20 Fraser fir
30 Hemlock

I guess I'll put in some sweet corn for the raccoons and the rest of the garden for family and friends.

As bullish as the trade has become on corn and because it seems most years there is some kind of a weather scare, producers might look for a sharp rally to sell on. The top of it, if it comes will be sharp and short-lived because no one will be selling, thus the reason for the rally. Today with corn around $4.00, one would think that the up side is greater than the downside.

We planted about 150 acres wheat last fall. Half of it probably won't make it. We are going to try to turn those acres into corn. I think we're gonna stick our neck out a little on corn contracts this year. Lock in some of that $4 new crop price. I don't see it lasting. Another wet spring and those acres will be beans tho. Sittin on a barn full of last years straw. Don't think there will be much baled this summer. Should be a big demand for it next year. What do you horsemen/ranchers down south think?

Since my Hay is perennial I guess I will stay with it. I plan to add a small garden and my friend and I have 5 acres of sandy loam river bottom land that we hope to put into strawberries and sweet corn and other veggies and then run a roadside stand on my HWY side of the farm. Should help keep me busy all summer and make a few extra bucks to. Walt

Seeding down my 30 acres that was corn last year and growing more bmr sorgrum sudan and more hay. I'm planting no corn this year for grain or silage as I cant get 85-95 day corn it is completely sold out, and what I can find are just crap varieties. Gonna buy 120 ton of corn silage at $25/ton and sell any extra hay I make. Grass grows good here corn does not.

At this point my plans are to follow my ordinary rotation. I do have the option to swing an additional 50 acres into corn, but probably will not because of input costs. I would also have storage and drying issues. We topdressed the wheat this past week and there are several areas that have not survived the wet fall / winter. Probably lost over 15%. These acres will probably go to beans.

Actually, I was thinking I would plant a few more fruit trees this year. I won't make any kind of profit, but they sure do taste good when ripe. I know this has nothing to do with grain crops, but perhaps a couple each of apple, cherry, and peach. Already have a couple good pear trees.

Talking to my neighbors yesterday they all said same acres in same crops. afraid if they go to more corn the market will crash on them

Were putting in 72 acres of sorghum sudan hybrid for hay. With round bales going for 60-70$ and squares going for 5$. The drought is supposed to be bad again this year,so hay prices will stay up.

stay with the hay acres and rest will be cash renting out this year,more net profit that way . I know that does'nt seen right but i am after most net profit only. $220.00 acre can't pass it up

Its anybody guess what's gonna be in demand come fall.

Rick maybe right a lot of hay acres may turn into corn acres so hay will go up.

Soybeans may turn into corn so soybeans may go up.

Or everyone will plant the same rotation and corn will be high.

Who knows?

I myself am keeping the same rotation and keeping deversafied.sp?

Looks like your plan is that way also Dave.
