Previous renter stopped in and said he had my land enrolled in EQIP no till and if he cant run it he will be way short on his NO till commitment, his other lands were tilled last fall, and I am sure he would have some serious advance payouts to return or something. So we made a deal that he can run it this year, and next year I will be able to aquire the land he rents adjacent to mine, about 100 acres. I hope I made the right decision. So I guess all I will have this spring to plant will be my sweetcorn and help my freind get his 700 acres planted on time. Sigh!:>(

I don't know how he could enroll it without your signature. I think he pulled a fast one on you just to secure your land for 2 yrs. at at time when some of your other neighbors might be stopping by to offer you big $$ for your land because of corn prices.

that program has not yet been activated in Iowa, cause i keep trying,if its going to be handed out. It is per acre payment for no till crop practices and since I have not done any tillage for seven, eight timer gets away years i figured why not. It has worked for me sold everything except trator drill and combine.Combine will be selling this season also. Can have it done way cheaper than owning now. I would not of let him get away with that thou and I thought the owner if it was rented had to sign before anyway. Don't know thou as rule seen to change each time get letter from that office.

What is EQIP?

Did you notify the renter of termination in legal time?

Here in Iowa the deadline is Sept. 1 for the next year.

If you terminated before legal time I would be charging a little more rent.

Take this from a guy who rents more than 700 acres.

There is noway I can tie up land in a program more than one year at a time unless I have a multi year lease.

Just my thoughts.

Gary

I`ve signed up on the EQIP program and am fencing and cross fencing and it about figgers there paying for the material . Two springs for cattle and a heavy use area to feed on in the winter . Some will call it wellfare , it`s there and sombody is gona get it , so I say get in line . Like said before they like people that want to do several things , not just one .

EQIP is "Enviromental Quality Incentives Program". One my EQIP Eligible Practice List there are 68 different prac tices you can do to qualify. The more you do the better the chances of your plan being accepted. It is not just no till. Everything from low pressure irrigation conversion, fencing off areas, min till, cover crop, etc , etc. The one thing that is mandatory is that you have to do something different than you are doing now, that has a positive impact on eniroment, soil conservation etc. I posted a likk with some info. For me I was planning on Min or no till, manure management, residue management, and countour planting the feild around the pond. Its a good program. Each practice has its own $/term/acre amount. Check out the website as I am still learning and my "facts" may be off a bit

Under the circumstances I think yall did the right thing but I would question why a renter would enroll your property in a program without your knowledge.

I agree, that was one of the reasons I have a bit of a sour taste with renting. I know he has quite a few acres enrolled in EQIP and and pays less than $20 acre for OK land. I just beleive you need to let the owner know what his/her land is being enrolled in. I'm not sure, but I beleive when I was reading the "rules" it said you had to provide proof of securing the farm rights to the land for the term of the Eqip contract, which I beleive is 3 years. Well, I have 100 acres worth of chicken crap a year so I should be about right running 100 or so acres. I ussually sell the manure for $1300-$1400, what would it cost me to fertilize 100 acres with commercial fertilizer? I beleive the U of M recommends 2-3 tons /acre for my soil. But I need to take soil samples next fall and have my manure tested also.

Just watch what they do very closely, the last thing you want is some kind of legal action, especially with some program in the mix too.
