Woke up this old diesel from a 7-month nap yesterday and did a little field work. Sure felt good out there.

How come my favorite tractor is always the one I'm running at any given time? They can't all be the best can they? Geeeze!

Looks very nice! Was the 686 your first restoration project of the tractors you currently have? I don't remember hearing anything about the restoration process.

This is the one that I took such a beating on.

Bought it over the phone for something like $4K and immediately had to dump another $10K in it to make a tractor out of the old sow. The only thing it had was a good engine; the rest was total junk down to and including the wheel bearings.

Live and learn; she's a workin' muther now. :>)

You suppose we could send it back, it's supposed to be green if delivered on the 17th of March, clearly stated in the contract, but all we got is a bunch of this white stuff. Mud season is next, and look there is that pesky chevy with a snow plow that is still on strike.

Don't you miss opening the door to this? Spring has been delayed here, well this won't stay long, but it's holding 20 degrees, ever since the jetstream dipped in mid january, it's been a real winter on this end, it'll change quick now. That ole 850 LP powered ford in the background, did fire right up yesterday and did clear some snow.

That is some nice work there and I'll bet the innards are in the same shape as the outards(paint) looks great, those vintage IH's do grow on you !

I don't want to be too critical but you spent a lot of money on putting the "barnsiding" on your garage walls how come you don't have anything on the ceiling? Nice job on the tractor(s)!

Allan: Someday when you have time, please tell me anything you can about the 1586. I need a little more horseypower than I have now and I have 7 or 8 of them spotted. I know they need duals to get all that power to the ground but that's about all I know. The ones I'm going to look at look real good in pictures, have 5 to 7k hours and asked prices are between $12,995 and $18,000. Thanks.

For that kind of money I'd be looking for a 5288/5488, they are a huge improvement over the older IH tractors and you should be able to find one in that price range or close to it. We have three 1066s, a 1086 and a 5488 and the 5488 is by far the nicest to run out of the bunch plus the rear ends in them are built strong enough that there isn't much worry about tearing one up. The transmission and rear end in the 88s are the same basic design still being used in the new Magnums (alot of the same part numbers still being used) and they use a true powershift instead of a TA.

Ive always heard there are two kinds of ta's those that are out and those that are about to go out. Was at auction yesterday had a 1066 with 4000 one owner hours. went for $5200. really nice looking tractor. they said ta was good but I always think about what I was told.

Some people seem to have terrible luck with TAs but they've never been much of a problem for us. Our 706 has 12,000 hours on the original TA, our 1086 has almost 11,000 on the original TA, we have one 1066 with 7,800 hours on the original TA and we just replaced the original TA in our 826 at just shy of 11,000 hours. We do have a 1066 that got a TA at around 3,500 hours and our 6788 got one at around 4,000 hours but they both had weak TAs when we bought them.

Thanks, Cliff. As a matter of fact, one of the places I'm going to has a 5488 sitting right beside the 1586. Nice looking tractor from a distance and I'll be sure to take a look at it too.

Hey Bill,

Cliff gives really good advice; think I'd have to go along with him on this one. They say that 5488 is nothin' short of a "bull" without the horns.

I've never owned a 15xx, but the idea of that "3-speed" tranny would turn me off in a hurry for a working tractor.

There is one of those rascals setting in on the lot in town. I won't even drive by there anymore 'cause it's just too darned tempting.

I've never had a 312, but the big boys tell me that they are the best darned engine by far that IH ever put out.

Are they noisey like the 400s are? That 766 I had would make ya call fer yer mama after about 20 minutes. :>(

This is another one of my "total restoration" tractors. Way, way too much money spent on this one.

Darned thing just mostly sets now. Really needs to be somewhere where it can be worked, but I just don't have the heart to sell it. :>(
