Hey tractor folks:

I am currently restoring an MM plow. Many of the bolts used on this plow were square headed. Does anyone know where you can buy square headed bolts without having to buy a full box of one size? I need various sizes. I am in Eastern Iowa - Iowa City / Cedar Rapids area.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try your Deere dealer. Sometimes Deere used square bolts, and sometimes only a square bolt will work (like rear wheel weights) and sometimes Deere has better prices for bolts than the farm and fastener stores, though McM-C is good so long as you can use a box though they will sell partial boxes in some sizes for a higher price than in the catalog.

McM-C wants to think they are dealing with a company but they take plastic and their whole catalog is on line these days.

Did you check Granger? If you know what size and length, I will be driving from Garnavillo to IA City VA April 10th. If you don't need to many, and I have them you can have them. I always buy new square headed bolts at old hardware stores going out of business. I never have to pay much for them either, just deal with the (WHY THE HECK DOES HE WANT THEM) remarks. Only a fool would know!

Gary I have several sizes here.

Dad took a lot of old machinery apart and saved the bolts.

Re: Square headed bolts.

Sooo easy to make your own! Square bar, drill it tap it and cut off as thick a head as you need. screw in appropriate threaded round bar stock and weld the round in the square. Job done. Don"t try to do thread in each head separately as starting the thread will be where any "crookedness" is introduced. A lathe helps. Pick your steel grades. Probably as good or better than the originals.

definitely NOT as good as the originals.

The heads and nuts were heat treated and perhaps some of the early ones were slightly forged.

With today's poor quality steel, it will never last as long. I can go right outside and pick up a set of cultivators out of the ground and take them apart with a wrench. You would not believe the amount of pitted rust on a bolt and still be able to come off.

Today's bolts would shear right off, even your own if you don't get the same process they used 80 some odd years ago.

That is why I said: "Pick your steel grades"
If you use the cheapest bar you can find the product you make will reflect that. Heat treatment is a fairly simple option, depending on the steel grade.
You could make them in stainless steel if you wanted to avoid any corrosion, but..... ..

Tupelo Hardware in Tupelo, MS has been in business for 75 years or more. They have a lot of NOS bolts going back many years in their warehouse. About 15 years ago I was up in their warehouse and spotted some post vices like the old mule farmers used to rebuild their mower sickles. They also had a lot of plow points and sickles for the old mule equipment as well as a NOS forge. Those items disappeared rather quickly when the interest in working horses and mules as a hobby spiked a few years back. Their big claim to fame is that Elvis's first guitar was bought from them. You can find their phone number online and can likely get bolts of a similar vintage to your plow. They have been an industrial supply house for more years then I have been alive and are not your typical hardware store.

Fastenal can supply you with square headed bolts. I have not bought any from them yet, but will in the near future for a cultivator restoration. When I checked, I thought their prices were fairly reasonable. As I recall, a 3/4" x 5" was $1.35. If you get Red Power Magazine there is an ad in every issue for Norman Jackson, Greensburg (east of Indianapolis), IN. Per the ad he specializes in square headed bolts. phone (317)431-4803 Cell afternoon and evenings.

Thanks. As for red power mag, I have an MM, a JD and am restoring an MM plow. Not likely that I have any red power magazines laying around. However I do have a "friend" who I think has one. I'll secretly look though it for the source you mentioned.

Seriously, thanks. I appreciate it.

Fastenal has a lot of stuff, I've never looked for square head bolts, but if you have a store in your area, it might be worth the time to visit. They also have a website, but I find it rather difficult to use.

Thanks a lot guys. McMaster Carr looks like it will work. I just need to figure out exactly what I need. If I need too many various lengths, they have bolts with full threads also. I don't know why I didn't check them. We use them all the time at work.

Thanks again. I knew I could count on you guys.

My local Fastenal store won't sell less that a box so therefore they don't sell me any.
