What oil to replace

I recently purchased a Lamborghini R904DT farm tractor which seems to be a victim of neglect. I've never seen an air filter so clogged, and it was dated 1974! Anyway, I've drained the hydraulics, rear differential and transmission before realizing that no one can tell me with any certainty what kind of oil to replace. A representative with SAME (SAME owns Lamborghini) has told me to use 10W30 for everything. Should I just go with that? Or should I consider the possible differences in the intended climate and use something else? Why don't we use a single oil for everything here in the US?

Just had to jump in.

I agree with the those who say engine oil in the engine and trans fluid in the trans. Hy Guard or Hy Tran for the trans. HY Tran is the replacement for gear oil in the old letter series.

I'd even use dextron in the trans before 30wt. I just don't think 30wt will hold up like trans fluid.

my 2 cents

If you decide to use the engine oil for the transmission and hydraulics, be sure to use non-detergent oil if there is no filter on the transmission or hydraulic sumps. You want any particles to settle out and stay at the bottom where there is less chance for them to be cycled through the system and cause wear. I don't know how easy it is to find 10W30 in a non-detergent though. I only remember seeing it in single weight oils.

Does the transmission clutch, pto clutch, brakes or transmission clutch packs run in oil? If so an oil with specs equal to Deere's Hy-Guard is required. The engine will require any good 15W40.

If it were me.. and i had no info to go on.. I'd put a good rated gas oil in a gas engine.. or diesel rated oil in a diesel engine.

If the tractor is multi sump.. I'd use gear oil inthe tranny and rear end, and hydro fluid or UTF int he hyds.

If it was a single sump unit.. I'd use UTF in all sumps.

That's a guess. but without dealer support.. it's about as good as ya got.

( if 10w30 is fine for a sump. then UTF should be too.. except the crankcase.. etc.. )

Thanks for the reply, Soundguy. The hydraulics, differential and transmission are all seperate. What I drained looked like some type of gear oil in the diff. and trans., and hydraulic oil in the hydraulics. The guy with SAME in Georgia said to put 10w30 in each, and I was prepared to go buy a bunch of it, but then I decided to get opinions from some of you tractor gurus. I'm going to work the tractor, so I just want it to last. Basically, I guess I was looking to hear why I should or should not use the 10w30 for everything.

I wouldn't put 10w30 engine oil in the diffy.. it doesn't have the ep addatives that may be needed there.

As i said.. if it were me.. I'd put UTF in all sumps, plus correct oil in crankcase based on fuel type. OR gear oil in the diffy/trans, and UTF / HYDRO oil in the hyds.. then proper oil in crankcase for fuel type.

Remember that what you drained out may only have a passing relation to what SHOULD be in there...
I guess I wouldn't have any problem with 10w30 or even 30wt in everything. Lotsa motorcycles use engine oil in the tranny. Lotsa early hydralic systems used engine oil and lotsa hydrostatic transmissions use engine oil...

I think part of it for me would be what are you doing with it? If you're working it real hard I'd work real hard to find a manual to know what to put in. Otherwise engine oil is a place to start...
