There is a 250 gallon propane tank with wet line coming at auction next month. I need one. How often are these tanks suposed to be inspected/pressure tested? Where would the date of the last inspection be located? What should I look for when inspecting this tank to buy? Thanks for the help.

Make sure it has the pressure rating for propane and isn't a old lower pressure butane tank or your LP dealer won't even fill it.

first thing to be sure of is that the auctioneer has the papers of ownership from the person selling the tank. these have to be transfered over to the buyer of the tank at the auction! without that slip it is illegal to fill the tank,,this is a federal law,,under homeland securety. secondly if it is a " A.S.M.E. tank" inspection and requalification is every 12 years. normally you will find an "E-" followed by the year it was inspected stamped on the collar or the om plate. if it is a "D.O.T. tank" no requalification is needed BUT it is in your best interest to have it inspected by a qualified person. look at the valves and the pressure release vavle---if it does not have a rubber cap on it---it must be replaced with a new one of the same size and pressure and have a rubber cap on it to prevent dust etc. from going down into it and causing it not to operate if ever needed,,other wise the vessel can rupture from pressure build up that a non operating release valve cannot dump, and when this happens 99
out of a 100 times death is one side effect. so be careful. check that hose if it has just even slight crackes showing on the rubber surface any where,,mainly at the end fittings, will need to be replaced by a new " LP " hose. ( 25 footer is roughly $80.oo } be careful and cautious, look the tank over good for rust especially on the bottom.

TnT, I own my tank, it is a 300 gal older tank. I have never had any LP gas dealer pitch a fit about testing, tank age or any thing else. JUST be sure the OM tag is still on the tank, secured in place. If that tag is gone, The tank is allready condemened and they are looking for a sucker to pawn it off on! If that tag is loose or could be lost, squirt some sort of epoxy glue uder the tag to secure it better and you will be ok. Depending on things hopefully it is near empty, If the tank is fairly old have the head rebuilt with new rubber seals and you should be good to go. It it isn't use the LP up first. Your local LP dealer can help you rebuild it, While it is on you triler just run it but their shop and get it done or you can do ityourself, Start of by letting the pressure off of the tank after you have gotten all the liquid out. Just get guidence from them for they have to do it for their tanks that start leaking at customers homes and other places. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.
