Need Some Ideas

Overhauling a rear combination light.

Over the years, the red backing had cooked away from the lens under the road bulb and the light shines more or less clear-white now.

Got any idea of what I can put on this lens to give it the "red" again? It would have to be something that can handle the heat of the field light.

Thanks,

Allan

I would try repairing the lens with candy apple red model car spray paint. It shouldn't cost over a couple of dollars for the little can. Of course I would carefully clean the lens before spraying the inside. And then I would try to bend the mounting bracket so the bulb doesn't sit so close to the lens anymore. Good luck!

My combo light just has a silvered sealed beam with a clear bulb behind it and the inside of the case is red. looks pretty red when working.

I figure soundguys recommendation for a red coating is the best, but where to get it ?

It's been a couple years since I bought one but last I knew those bulbs were still available from Case. I think the bulbs Case sells are made by General Electric so they were probably used by other companies as well.

AutoZone has red covers that fit over the bulb. The head from the bulb shrinks the material just like shrink tubing. Doesn't make the lense look better but will emit a red light again.

I would try the tail light repair tape. You may want to price out a new lamp first. Industry number is 4603X.

I got one from NAPA earlier this month, cost me $22.00.

If you decide to replace it you can always use the old one for a head lamp

Turn the lens so the light is shining through the other (unburned) side. Unfortunately, we're getting to the age where that would probably last for as long as you own the tractor.

A little piece of the red tape they sell for temporary fixes to broken tail lights. Any of the chain auto parts stores or Wallyfart will have it.

You may want to check that little bracket that holds the socket Allan. If it is bent and setting too close to the lense it will just do it again on a new one. I had the same thing on the 656. Had to bend it closer to the shell a little.

Get some red 'gel' acetate that they use to tint par cans with.. it's made to take 500-1000w parcans at just a few inches away for quite a while..

I tried that once on a bulb; got so hot it burned off in about a minute. Might work on the lense tho, that is a ways from the bulb.

Go buy an LED replacement bulb in red. Should be pretty easy to find (that looks like a standard 1157 type bulb), and will give off plenty of red light, even if the lens is clear.

Light Emitting Diode. It's what all the little "lights" are on stuff now, along with the lights on trucks and trailers that look like lots of little bulbs. They make them with the 15mm socket base to replace regular bulbs.

Try here:>Link

I'm>Link pretty sure you can get them with red LED's, not just clear.

How about a new lens. That same exact light was used on the 100 series Masseys (as well as dozens of other brands and models) I bought a replacement at the local AGCO dealer last fall. Seems like it was under $20. Sometimes saving something old just isn't all it's cracked up to be. (Sure glad my doctor doesn't see it that way)

Really?

Hmmm, didn't know you could still get that red/white lens. I'll stop in at the Agco place today.

THANKS!

Allan

Yup, got one of those bulbs for our 285 last year or the year before. The red was burnt off that one too, but I replaced it because the bulb was burnt out. It still gave off a real faint red, just not much.

I thought only Massey's had those bulbs... I guess not!

The AGCO dealer I spend all (and I do mean ALL) of my money at is primarily a Massey dealer. They're stuck on selling oem parts instead of aftermarket. I'm ALMOST positive it was a Massey part #. If there's any question, just have them look up a "plow lamp" for a 135/150/165/175 Massey. New bulb was Bosch.
