O/T: air compressor capacitor

My father-in-law picked up a used compressor. It's got a 220v 2hp motor. When you turn it on, it does absolutely nothing. I've verified that it has power, the cord is good, the pressure switch is closed and the thermal reset is reset and good. Is there a way to check the start/run capacitor on the motor to see if this is the problem? Or is the motor junk? Something else that I'm overlooking?

Opinions and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Typically a bad capacitor would result in the motor humming but not starting. In this case, the problem is something else.

You say it does nothing. It doesn't hum, get hot, dim the lights, nothing? Or do you mean it doesn't spin, nothing?

If it really does nothing then either there's a broken connection, another thermal fuse or a burned winding. Try measuring for voltage right at the terminals in the motor case.

No it doesn't spin, hum, get warm. Just nothing. Like it's not even plugged in or turned on. I'll check up on your suggestions later this evening.

Does it have a motor starter on the side of the compressor ???

They generally look like a black or gray box screwed to the frame of the compressor. What the motor starter does it supply energy to the motor after the pressure switch has opened up. When the pressure switch closes the motor starter turns off and then turns you motor off.

If you do not, you can buy one and wire it inline with your compressor. They can be a pain in the butt to wire up though. It took me about 2 hours to wire mine up because the schematic I had was junk. You can find them on ebay pretty cheaply.
