I have a 1946 Ford 2N with front mounted distributor. I use it reguarly for grass cutting and for snow removal in the winter. Last spring I bought the alternator kit and changed it over to 12 volts. Starts and runs great now. Even in the winter after sitting for a few weeks in single digit temperatures. I have read in this forum about the 12 volt coils going bad and sure enough I had to replace the coil at the end of summer. Does anyone have knowledge or experence with the electronic ignition kit that comes with the 12 volt can type coil? I"m trying to decide wheather to invest in this kit or make sure I always have a spare 12 volt coil on hand. Thanks in advance for any replies I may receive.

There are a couple types of 12v coils sold for the front mount N tractors. One kind like about .47 ohms of extra resistance. The other type likes the OEM ballast resistor ( or a 8ne10306 dropping resistor ) but not both.

You can always just use the oem 6v coil and the ballast resistor and the dropping resistor i mentioned and it will run fine.

It is a simple hook-up for a 6 volt coil. Run through a ballast resistor while running (12 volts dropped for 6 volt coil) and directly fed (at full battery voltage) from the starter circuit for extra spark energy while cranking.
That is why they were used in the first place.

i change over a front to 12 work good then the coil burnt up. i was out town so guy got a new one 12v. dealer said put reistor in it cut it to 6v. some time would stat most time wouldn"t. took out the reistor starts right up. if it a 6v and you changing to 12 and not the coil ues a reistor. if changing coil to 12 then you dont need the reistor. one thing i can tell you is buy the set both coil and ingitor. i get mine form hy-capacity

i dont know if you have a coil with a built in resistor. a quick and easy fix would be to take a ride over to your napa autoparts and pick up a ballast resistor for an early 1970's chrysler b body car. its a little porcelain resistor with two terminals on it. take the power wire off the coil, hook it to the resistor, make up a short lead to go from the resistor to the coil. whaa laa!!!!that should take car of the problem. resistor will run you about 6 bucks or so
