Delco Alternator 10SI

Converting an Industrial motor to 12 volt. This NAPA rebuilt alternator has me stumped. It has full line voltage at the sensing terminal on the alternator. I use a pilot lite in the circuit which goes to the switched side of the ignition switch. Switch off-pilot lite is on, Switch on-pilot lite off. I am thinking I got a bad alternator. Comments please.

About the only way that can happen is if the #2 "sense" wire is shorting to the #1 "excite" wire. Either a short in the wiring or regulator plug, or a bad regulator where the two blades are shorted together.
This would feed power from the sense wire, to the excite wire to the indicator lamp,which would ground through the ignition coil or other accessory when the ignition switch is off. This would put the indicator light on when the switch is off and put it off when the leads are being fed battery power through both ignition on switch and regulator sense wire.

The #1 terminal; shown here with a diode in the circuit; is the terminal you are powering up through your "idiot light"; and the #2 terminal is the "voltage sense" terminal.

(The "idiot light" and the diode are direct substitutes for each other.)

Is this the way you have your's connected?

Hi Bob, Thanks for the pic. That is the way I have it wired, however the #1 Terminal has 12v. even with the plug disconnected. Thinking I have a unit with an internal malfunction.

If I'm following you correctly, I don't think there's anything wrong. That terminal is supposed to have power on it. When it's charging, it should have full voltage. The light only works on a very small difference between that and the battery.... mabey 2 V or something like that.
10si's are like this.... If they charge (put the light out), keep the battery up, and don't run it down over a period of idle time, there's nothing wrong with the alternator.....

make sure your switch is not grounding in off position. rather than a lamp i have always used an oil pressure switch [for an idiot lamp ] to supply energizing current to the alternator. hope this helps. someone with more know how than me may be able to expand on this.

This may be too late to do you any good, but yesterday I was thinking about you strange alternator problem and did a little checking with the guts of a 10SI alternator, to see what could make the #1 excite regulator terminal hot with the engine not running. I found that a shorted positive diode in the rectifier assy will feed battery power from the BAT stud, through the shorted diode,through the diode trio,to the regulator brush terninal and out the #1 exciter terminal. They sold you an alternator with a defective rectifier assy.
