Having just spent over $100 on new wiring harness from England, regulator and bits, I have meticously rewired this tractor, following the original manual and triple checking each wire to the right connection. Tractor starts fine, but ammeter (original) twitches and then dives deep into DIS, which means I am discharging, right? The wire to the ammeter does not connect to two terminals, but goes through a loop which reads the current I guess. If I run the wire the other way through the loop will it show CHG, or doesn't this matter?
Any other thoughts - your help greatly appreciated, thank you.

"Darkness brought to you by Lucas Electric". Or "Lucas the Prince of Darkness". With British eletrical systems you will be facing challenges.

Challenged:
I know very little about a Fordson Major.

But, you are correct about the wire through the ammeter loop.
That type ammeter only indicates which way current flows in the wire through the meter loop and how much current is flowing. If you take the wire out and pass it through the loop in the opposite direction, all the meter's readings will reverse.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably charging correctly, but with the wire through the loop installed backwards. That ammeter has no effect on the charging system's operation. If you have working lights, turn them on with engine off. Ammeter should show 'DIS', if it's wired correctly.

Through the loop? Sounds like a current transformer. This might be normal. If you wire a CT bacwards it will read discharge. It is dependent upon the magnetic field of the wire for a reference. If the wire is put in backward, it will read backward. Does the battery discharge? Do the headlights work?

I hope this is as easy as it sounds.

Aaron

Aaron...

NOT to "nitpick"; just to clarify terms...

Since we are dealing with DC here; it's NOT a current transformer; which only work on AC current.

It is an "induction ammeter". And; yes; it will read backwards if the wire is looped through it the wrong way.

OH; OH; now I've got to thinking... IS "induction ammeter" the correct term?

It is a magnetic field strength meter calibrated in approximate amps. JimN

Do you have a voltmeter? When the tractor is running is the voltage at the battery above or below the rated battery voltage? If it is above then it is charging.

Thanks Vern. That's a simple test that will tell me if I have a problem or not..... ....

Yep, That's all there is to it.
I read the Ford 'N' board all the time and it seems the loop, or current transformer, was standard on the old Fords.

Are you wiring it positive ground or negative ground ???
