F.I.L. is starting a feed business, he's got a nice machine shed to work out of, but the floor is packed waste ag-lime, and his driveway is loose gravel. The barn isn't the largest around. Right now he's using his 6400 JD and 640 loader to move pallets around, but visibility is a challenge to see the forks to get pallets stuck right w/o biting bags, and it gets really tight in the barn to get things stacked up, so he can't use the barn to the best of its potential. His feed pallets are going to weigh in around 2200#, but we'd like to figure some extra capacity. the local tractor dealer wants to sell him an older skid loader b/c he says they have less trouble w/ the older machines than the newer ones. I worked at a coop w/ an 1845C case, and 2200# was about all you wanted, it would pick up the pallet, but it would also lift the rear as well. I'm a little leary of the loaders the dealer is pushing him, a large sized used loader in the $5000 range...hydro problems come to mind real quick. I suggested an older tractor, possibly a narrow front w/ a rear mounted forklift attachment might be handy, or one of the "rough terrain" fork lifts that amount to a mid sized tractor turned around and a mast permantly attached. The value of the flexibility of the 2nd tractor, or the skid loader appeals to him. Does any one have any suggestions?

Thanks for the input. I've spent my entire career in the seed business, but at a large retail level, and now at a research station. here it's forklifts of all sizes. The forklift is the ideal tool, but he's a little hesitant to buy something that he can't use somewhere else in his operation, so i was looking for input on what other farmer's use in their operations.

one of my old farmer seed dealers had a NF 18XX Oliver w/ a forklift mast on the back. I'm sure he went through clutches something awful, but it did work for him out in the driveway, and was fairly good in the barn too.

Get yourself a real forklift. Spent many hours on a Clark like the one in Walt's pic. On packed gravel shouldn't have any problems if it has air tires, they flex a bit & give fair flotation. Foam filled or solid tires would be helpless on gravel. Stay away from the 3 wheel Hyster unless on paved surface. Too much weight on that single rear wheel, it sinks fast. A forklift like that Clark, or any other brand of that type, will let you store & retrieve pallets in 4 foot wide rows without disturbing the rows beside. Rear steering turns short, inside(drive) wheel can cut a circle of 12 in radius, sometimes shorter. Also can drive inside supplier's trucks to unload. BUT--- don't try to carry a pallet inside a single axle straight truck, the front end will lift, the rear drop, & you are stuck.
More info, too long to post here, quick & dirty ways to build a loading dock, etc. Shoot me an E-mail.

I agree with the tractor forklift. A used skid steer, in my opinion is a real crapshoot. They are too much fun to scoot around and tend to get beat up in a hurry.

where do you live I have a 4000 lb RT Forklift here that belongs to a friend. It on propane right now but can be changed over to gas. I would have ot ask him what he wants for it. I tried to start it once it cranked over over but wouldn't fire I think its in the fuel system. shouldn't take to much to get it up and running and would handle what you have very good. 503 623 0460

I'd suggest the big fork lift; it is much more maneuverable than a tractor. The older ones are fairly bullet proof, especially the ones with manual shift and propane fuel. Most of the problems with fork lifts are in a manufacturing environment where they run them 24/7 and beat the whoopie out of them. The bigger companies that use forklifts have formal operator training.
