For the first time we are going to plant sunflowers for doves. I have gotten educated about the variety and the "how to's", but need some help on seed selection. One man has suggested a certified black oil brand($$$$) and another has suggested that I purchase the standard black-oil bird seed for about $12/50lbs. If I choose the cheaper route I will need some help with plate suggestions as well. Any suggestions appreciated.

I've used Perdovic black oil seeds, about 50 cents a pound, also am now using Clearfield, resistant to Beyond herbicide, works great, but seed was $220 for 32 pounds!! also, use small flats plate in your planter...Cmore

The black seeded ones were great for doves last fall. Better yet cut down a small pach of mature wheat.

Just go buy a 10 pound bag of black oil bird food sunflower seeds. Shouldnt cost more than 5 bucks or so. I have planted them before and they grow like crazy.

I am gonna plant some of those again this year, think I will mix in some grey stripe ones too (every other row).

I usually go talk to the mill super, and he lets me shovel old maze, wheat, and whatever i can find around the silo's in a 55gal drum and run it through a grain drill, the past few years, i have had a food plot that you wouldn't believe, a friend of mine just goes to the coop and gets the cheapest seed he can find, it works real good

Western Kansas has the wild sunflowers and they work fantastic for bringing in the doves, especially if it is in line for a water hole.
Around here the guys plant oil seed sunflowers for the crushing plants.
I would think most any sunflower would work good. Happy Hunting!!!!
