Tractor engine quit

I bought a 44 2N tractor in December. It"s my first time owning a tractor, so I"m new. The other morning the engine stopped running abruptly and won"t start again. What would you suggest to troubleshoot?

Quickest way to test a condenser? Hold the condenser by the insulation on the wire. Then hold the terminal next to a bare end of a spark plug wire on a RUNNING ENGINE. Then yell,HERE! and toss it to your buddy. If the condeser is good, you will soon know it by his eeowwww ,you SOB! lol,bob

Tim, a condenser is like a storage battery. It stores electricity and then when the points open (break) it enables the mighty shot for the plugs. To test, take an ohm meter and test it AFTER discharging any electricity. Discharge by holding the body to the tractor engine and then touching the wire terminal on the end to the engine at the same time(holding it by the insulator). Next, hook up your ohm meter with the positive to the terminal and the ground to the body. Let it charge for a minute, then unhook the meter and discharge it as described above, looking for a spark. If you have the spark, it's probably OK. The cheapest thing is to replace the condenser and try starting the engine.

If it was the condenser there would have been a lot of noise as th engine backfired and sputtered to a stop.

The best test is to remove the coil wire from the distributor then short the - wire from the coil to a ground if you get spark then its ok then just work down the line till you get to the ground at the distributor. Turn the engine so that the points are open then short across them with a screwdriver when you break the connection the coil should fire. Also check the ignition switch it could be bad and you are not getting juice to the coil.
Its like looking for the reason your sprinkler won't work start at the pump and work towards the sprinkler there should something broken or plugged or some reason the water (electricity )is not getting to the end of the run.

Tim, The first thing I'd do is recheck your work. You said you replaced the coil and distributer. Pull the distributer again checking that the little spring on the end of the coil is properly seating in the distributer. Check the point gap (screw may have come loose or slipped)and check the condensor. They don't go bad often, but when they do, you have a no-run condition. One time I pinched a wire putting the unit back together and it didn't show up right away. Good luck.

tim, if i read your posts right, you have no spark at the plugs. you replaced coil already. first, check to see if you have power going to the coil, you can use a test lite or voltmeter. check the power side of the coil with the ignition switch on. if there is no power there, you will need to trace the wires back thru the ignition switch and to the battery. you mayhave a broken wire somewhere or a defective switch.

I probably wasn't very clear in another post about replacing the coil. I put back the old one to check the spark at the spark plug. I haven't bought anything new yet.

@ things to check first. #1 do you have a good blue spark at all the plugs?? #2 do you have fuel getting to the carb?? To check for spark pull one plug out, then hold it on the engine some place. Now with it OUT OF GEAR and the key on try to start the engine. If you have spark then move to the carb. Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb. You should get a good steady flow of gas. After checking those things post back for more help

I don't seem to have a spark--assuming that I did that correctly. The starter turns the engine over fine. And just for the experience, I opened the drain plug at the bottom of the carb, and there was definitely a good steady flow of gas.

In case you've read my other post & are wondering: yes, I replaced the coil & distributor, reconnecting the spark plug wires & the top wire on the coil before checking for spark at the spark plug.

I haven't seen anything obviously wrong with the distributor, but then I'm not sure what I'm looking for either.

Most likely the points are bad or have slipped so the are no longer gapped at the .015 they should be. Or your ignition switch is bad either one can cause your problem but more likely its the points

Instant stop is often electrical, sputtering to a stop is often fuel related. KISS formula. Got spark? Hot coil? Got fuel? Flow?

Definitely no sputtering. I apparently do not have a spark. I DO have fuel at the bottom of the carb. Don't know about hot coil. How do I check that?

Best way to check for spark is pull off a plug wire- hold it- and crank the engine! Spark at the plug is the last place to check before the plug- no spark, then work back from there til you get one. IT WILL NOT KILL YOU- just makes you jump! No spark- that's where you start. Hot coil?- need to check that just when it dies- literally hot- more than warm when you touch it- means bad coil. You need spark at the mag or distributor- between the points. Points need to be set right at the lobe- 4 lobes on your mag or distributor, not in between. But, if it was running and quit, the problem is somewhere between....wires, condenser, coil, etc.

You will probably get better help if you actually post on ght e9n-2n-8n forum.

Abrupt stopping can be a number of things.. electrical are the first that comes to mind. 2nd is fuel.. 3rd is bad...like.. no oil pressure and the engine seizes.

You don't give -ANY- info to go on here.. like.. does the engine crank over?

Have you checkd for gas a tthe bottom of the carb bowl drain?

Spark at the plug?

Could be a 5 minute problem.. or 5 hour problem.. post back with some info to help us help you.

Engine cranks, but doesn't fire.
Good, steady flow of gas at bottom of carb.
Apparently no spark (if I checked it right).

You want to determine if it is fuel related or electrical. One never knows if they just quit until you do that. If it is electrical, you've got points, plugs, wires, condenser, and coil to check out.

Well the gas tank isn't empty, and gas is getting to the carburetor. I'm thinking it's electric. I've checked spark plugs (seem to be fine) and I've pulled off the coil & distributor so that I can work with them.

Since I'm a novice, I won't be offended by very basic explanations or comments. I do have access to manuals on CD.

The ground connection from the battery to the tractor is strong. Where else should I be checking?

well i would check the water separator if it has one, its a little glass bulb. take that off and dump out whatever is in it, probably full of sediment and that kinda stuff. It might be full of water. If its full of water, put it back on, and try starting the tractor. It will probably start after a few trys and if it had lots of water in it, it may full back up with water again so u might need to empty it a few times to get all the water out.
