How Much $$ Is Fair?

Saturday/Sunday my cousin and I took HIS pickup and trailer to Michigan and got my CASE VAC14. It was a 920 mile trip. At this point I've paid for all the gas&tolls. How much more would you say I should give him for the use of his equipment? He is a tractor lover and enjoyed the trip, but I sure don't want to take advantage of him. My truck and trailer was not ready to go. I will not likely have the chance to trade back the favor, so I want to settle up with cash. I sure appreciated the favor!

Personally, I don't care too much for the cash idea. Kind of turns the relationship into an employee/employer kind of thing in my mind. Having eight siblings myself, I always know that there are going to be plenty of opportunities down the road to help them out at sometime with something.

Sence it is a relative.... he'll be back one day needing a favor from you. What does he like, get him a case of beer, carton of cigs, or a gift card to Lowes, whatever. My cousin & I usually trade favors too. He hauled a grain drill for me & I let him borrow the post hole digger. That type of thing, stop feeling guilty, it will work out one day down the road.

Glenn, Been in that spot several times. Don"t know how close you two are, but one things for certain... everybody likes to eat. I"d consider taking him and (his) significant other out for a nice meal at a nice restaurant. It shows genuine appreciation when cash sometimes appears offensive.(personally, cash doesn"t offend me)
Just a thought.

Let's say his pickup cost him $30,000 and you used up about 1% of the estimated 100,000 miles that it should run before heavy replacement costs set it. So you in effect used up about $300 of his truck. Give him a thank you note with three $100 bills in it. Don't be cheap!

Fill it up with fuel

Wash and wax the pickup(detail)

Get it serviced

I always do this but don't expect it in return

I really appreciate each of your responses. I intentionally gave little information in my initial question so as to get even more objective responses. While we are cousins on good terms, and enjoy each other's company, we don't have a lot of contact. When we started out, his 34 gallon gas tank was empty. When he headed home, his gas tank was full and I gave him a nice little chunk of cash. The trip was a hard job for his little half-ton truck, and I figured I'd rather over-pay than under-pay. He certainly didn't expect me to "pay" him as I did, but I felt I just couldn't do less. Having good friends/relatives who are there for you when you're in a bind sure means a lot.

Since he is your cousin I would say you have probably already met any obligations, but if you really want to cover all of his expenses, you should double what you paid for the fuel.

Thanks for bringing this up. This saturday I'll be borrowing one of my boss's trucks and using my trailer to go look at and possibly buy a tractor about 3 hours away. I know they won't take any money for letting me use the truck, but I'll give it back with a full tank and if he lets me I'll change the oil in it for them.

I don`t know how close you are to your cousin, but I can share my experience.
My best friend and I frequently help each other out. He`s a carpenter, I`m a mechanic. We got into this rut of every time one of us would do something for the other one, we`d buy a gift cert., something for hunting or fishing, etc.
Finally, we got to the point to where we said enough. Now we just help each other out, no strings attached. It`s worked out real well, we don`t feel any pressure to run out and get something to repay the other anymore. I should add that if I work on anything of his, he pays for the parts. If he does carpentry work for me, I pay for the supplies. I think you paying all the costs of the trip is expected and fair. If you give him too much in money or a gift, he may feel obligated to do the same if he ever needs any help. You may not be able to repay him by hauling a tractor, but you could offer to help him out with something else.
Just my opinion Brokenwrench

Just tell him you owe him a favor and that anytime he needs help with something to give you a call. Although if I ask for a friend to help me during a time when they could be working I pay them to compensate them for there time. These are just ideas and he's your cousin and you know him and what he would need better then I would. Mike.

Glen, you've been fair in my estimate and I agree with the guys who suggest getting him an oil change. Go to the dealer or place he uses and get a gift certificate for an oil change for his truck. If someone paid my gas and tolls and we had a good trip out of it, the oil change would be appreciated and more than compensate me, I would think.

Why not do him a favor like getting his oil changed. Its things like this that i know i appreciate. Usually trips are fun and the little bit extra an oil change would cost sure would probably be nice. Just the trip put him halfway or so closer to the next one. just my thoughts

YOU PAID FOR EVERYTHING IT SOUNDS LIKE, TAKE HIS TRUCK TO GET THE TIRES CHECKED OR MAYBE THE OIL CHANGED, AND GET THE TRAILER TIRES CHECKED, THAT"S WHAT IT"D DO IN YOUR SITUATION.

If I was your cousin, just the gas and tolls would do it. If you gave me cash, I'd be offended. If you bought me a nice gift, I'd be appreciative.
