I have a very hilly piece of ground (~5 acres) that needs to be cut with either my 5' brush hog or 5' flail mower. I'm looking for a low-center-of-gravity tractor and am thinking of an MF 35. I have a new New Holland 40HP which sits too high and feels like it will turn over at 15% and my IH Cub Lo-Boy is just not strong enough. I am looking for live PTO, +25HP, lights for late evening cuts, and wide front. Don't need 4WD or other fancy features. And I am open to any color. I like all tractors no matter their lineage!

So what do you suggest I consider for this situation?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
KEG

Get a MF turf 20-it's the industrial version of the 135. Just as wide as a woods c-80 mower. Tough little mowing tractor, and plentiful, as highway dept's used lots of them.

Thanks guys. You brought up models I didn't even think of.

And, yes, these new utility tractors are nice, but they are way too high. Gives one the 'ol pucker factor way too often.

Widen out the stance of the wheels. I know this can be done on an Oliver 550, Ford 3000, and a Massey 50. BTW, the Oliver and the Massey did NOT have spin out rims. We had ours running on 84" centers for tobacco farming.

I use a 1715 Ford/New Holand 4wd 27 HP with a 5' King Kutter . Didn't like it untill I turned all 4 wheels around , Spread out wide with tires loaded , Now will slide before turning over . Uou will be better off with a 4wd on hill side if you don't put it any where you wouldn't put a 2wd . can run 8 hours on less than 5 GAL of fuel. Is much safer. also a MF-135 or like tractor is a good choice .

OldMax, be careful. My NH 1630 has the rear wheels truned around to gain width, and fluid (h2o + antifreee) filled rear tires. However, the Operator Manual warns not to reverse the dish on the front wheels. Warranty will be voided. Something about too much stress on the front wheel drive. Check your manual. Tom

Those massey 35 are good machines. Get a deisel, those perkins parts are alot cheaper than any others if needed.

I know what you mean about those NEW tractors sitting too tall ! I don't think anyone makes what I call a utility tractor. They are all too high and narrow more like a rowcrop.

My preference for that task would be a Massey Ferg 285. They are nice little unit in my opinion.

A 285 is kind of big for what he needs. MF made several turf model tractors with low center of gravity. Ford also made a bunch of LCG models. If you can find an MF 20,2135 or 135 they will have a direct injection diesel which is a better starter than the indirect injection models. They also have a better 3 pt. hitch. Even if you can't find a turf model, you can put the wheels pretty wide. Dave
