Alright, you guys.

Ran down to the home place this morning and dug out my old welders, gas bottles torches and assorted toys out from an old mice/racoon infested shed where they have been stored since February of 1983.

Found everything; all the tips, rosebud, regulators, etc. except the darned chipping hammer, so stopped in town and bought one of those, some welding rod and one of those automatic diming helments.

Do ya think I should pull the cap and blow the rat's nests out of this thing before I plug 'er in and grab that stinger? :>)

Learned to weld on this thing way back in the early fifties. Like they say, it ran good when it was parked. :>(

I just don't remember it being quite that darned heavy tho. 'Course, I was a bit younger back then too. :>)

Hi Allan,
I have one just like that. It used to be my grandfathers, he had since my earliest memories. And it still works good. It's been out in the rain and snow and just keeps going. Mine doesn't have a fan in it.

My dad bought one of those in 1957. It came with a 30 year warranty. I remember thinking that it would still be in warranty when I was 26. I still use it in my shop when I want to stick weld rather than wire feed.

Well it has been a long time since I've seen one of them things(Farney welder). I'll bet I still have the manual floating around here some place for that antique..:>)

Good old welder, burnt a lot of rod with one of them...

I'd make sure mice didn't start chewing on the wires. If it didn't say "Twentieth Century" on it, I'd have thought it was older than that. It may or may not have a fan. Some machines like Fourneys didn't have a fan. The transformer could hum also. Now that you've got a fancy helmet and a new chipping hammer maybe you want to compliment it with a nice new DC welder. You'ld be amazed at the difference and go on a fabricating spree. We could then drool over all your cool pictures of labour saving implements. Dave

I used to have one just like that many pounds of rods ago, got mine for $20 from an old boss back in the early 60's. Enjoy the new helmut.

Geeze Allan did you paint it red too once or did it come that way? Got one just about like that but it has a greenish blueish cover and yes there is a fan inside you need to clean and oil that motor some and blow the mess out. Excellent welders!

Aloha, Yes, I would open it up and clean the insides and check the wiring (gets brittle and insulation falls off), contacts, etc. Don"t use high pressure air because it may blow off the insulation.

Boy, it looks awful nice to me- its a shame to call it used. You'll never have any fun in this world if you don't live with a little gusto- just plug 'er in, turn it up to "liquefy", and get 'er done. Just be sure to do it in an open area, as the smell of smoldering rodents can really stink up a closed shop for awhile. Might best be tried while the Mrs. is in town, too, in case there's an impressive visual display. ;>)

Well,

That is what the wife just said. We were kinda wondering about "fried husband" here. :>)

After I went broke and fell in that whiskey bottle, I can remember grabbing a lead in each hand and seeing how much ampreage I could stand. (This was local cowboy entertainment in the local watering holes back then). :>)

They call it "tough guy" around here. During those years, I was tall, dark and damed good lookin'. Thought I could whip anyone in three counties and was hung like a Mississippi mule..... ..well, 'til I woke up the next morning and couldn't even lift my head. :>)

Whew! Glad those days are over and I lived to tell the tale!

Do these things have a fan in 'em? Seems to me I remember a "fan" sound while it was running.

'Course my ol' memory is getting bad and I've probably used 20 or 30 different welders at different garages since the farm sale.

I'd bet that it does have a fan. I've only seen and used one arc welder that did not have a fan, and it was some odd-ball brand that I can't remember.

Heck yes Allan there might be an old bottle of Wiskey in there, I always forgot where I hid those things.

I'll bet the old welder will work as good as new.
