At landlords and neighbors auction on Saturday they sold a 560D that I wanted.

I stopped bidding a little sooner then I wanted because a great nephew of the owner bid.

The nephew is also a neighbor.

Tractor brought about what is was worth, so that is not an issue.

Would have you kept bidding anyway?

I have a somewhat interesting story to tell. I was at a farm sale last summer that had an OLIVER 2150 FWA on it with low hours. I knew there would be keen interest in this tractor so I decided to let my step daughter and her friend, two adorable blond ten year olds, do the bidding for me. I don't think it made any difference in the price of the tractor but you could hear comments like "aw, let the little girls have it!", while the bidding was going on.

In the lunch line afterwards someone asked the fellow behind me "who bought the big OLIVER ?", and his friend said "two little girls!"

A big howdy to you sir,you are top notch in my book. I have been in the same spot that nephew was in before. It was a 70d JD my grandfather bought new in 55,which went to my father(which at this sale were both passed on),I had only X amount of money to spend on a dissassembled tractor which I HAD LOOKED FOR FOR YEARS and found ,word apparently got out about the story of the tractor. I got it for what I had in cash to spend. SIR,YOUR GOOD DEED WILL BRING YOU MANY FORTUNES OF VARIOUS MEASURES,IF NOT ONLY THE JOY YOU PLACED IN SOMEONES HEART, I THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR WHAT YOU DID, YOUR STORY GAVE ME JOY AND FOND MEMORIES.

Ohh, I think you did right. It probably meant more to him than it did to you. You'll surly find another one. On the other hand, if he was guarding it from going too cheap, you still did right. It doesn't hurt somebody to know what can happen when they do that.

Some years ago I was out of town and there was an immaculate JD D for sale at an auction nearby. I asked my son to go bid on it, and if we could not get it bid on another tractor there. Naturally the D went for more that I could stand - so my son bid on another tractor we liked. He noticed that a young man (12-14 yrs) was also bidding on it. He had heard the boys dad say "its your money -spend it wisely".
As it happens my son and this young man were the last bidders - there was a hesitation in the sale and the young man was the last bidder. My son could have went on - but this tractor was just another tractor to us - not totally what we wanted - he decided to quit. The tractor belonged to the young man.
When I got home and my son told this story - I was the PROUD Father for having my son do the right thing. The young man got his tractor and my son got to visit with him afterwards about his plans and share the joy this young man had.

Do the right thing !!!! You will never regret it!!!

It's the thought that counts... You did the right thing - unless he was just trying to squeeze a little extra sale proceeds for the family!

I was at a sale a couple of weeks ago bidding on a nice UB MM when I noticed my competition was a kid next to me... He was so young and seemed so excited (and I already have plenty of projects), that I stopped bidding and he got it very cheaply.

He didn't know I was bidding against him and later as he was admiring his tractor I went over and asked him a few questions about it. He was as excited as a grade-schooler on Christmas morning - and said his granddad had had a MM that had been sold and that he'd always wanted to find one that was similar...

Really made me glad I backed off...

You did the right thing. I have been on the other side of that more than once. Most of my projects have been special because of them being family heirlooms. Back in the late 70's a collector bought my grandad's 1946 jd d. Just last year my cousin accidently came across the tractor, which the collector had not restored. It is still in very restorable shape. The guy gave it back to our family and my cousin passed it on to me. You can imagine my excitement! On the other side of that, after my grandad passed away and my mother and her sisters had a machinery auction, one of the sisters removed an 860 Ford powermaster from the auction at the last minute for herself. For nearly ten years it has set in pieces in an old shed with her living several hundred miles away. Sometimes relative can be worse in these situations than anyone and it ends up everybody loses and creates potential hard feelings, too. I'm glad to hear what you did.

I pretty much have given up on farm sales, as they just get out of hand.

Yesterday, my neighbor had to give $535 for an old 4-section John Deere spike toothed harrow.

I took a Morris 24' rod-weeder to $1800 and gave up.

Wanted an old '69 Ford grain truck with a 16' combination box and it went for $5300.

So, I put my hands back in my pockets and came home, as I can call the dealer and buy over the phone cheaper than that. :>(

Yeah, I dont get sales. I drove down to West Virginia to bid on a NH 640 Round baler. It sold for $7200 when for the same money I can get one off the dealers lot at home... At the auction its your baby as soon as its "sold" so in my opinion it needs to go cheap to risk having someone steal it, or something being wrong with it

If your are still looking for a rod machine, Cormans (I think) down in Otis has one for $600, he actually has 2, I think it's a Miller 30' for $600, he advertises in the Fence Post.

Don't pay too much, drive south a ways and they are worth scrap plus tires unless they are really nice...nobody uses them anymore, see them on sales pretty often.

Ya did the right thing. I have been at auctions that some relation that the locals did not know were bidding on an item they wanted to keep in the family and the locals bid against them, if some one from the family the the locals knew stepped in and made a bid, the locals stopped bidding. That would be respect.

Last winter the son of the original owner of the 560D we had wanted to buy it back so he could restore it with his son. We really liked the tractor and didn't want to sell it but under the circumstances we felt that it was the right thing to do. We found a nice 656 gas hydro to replace it with, it cost a little more but it's got to be the handies yard tractor ever.

If I am at an estate sale and know the family I try to never bid against the kids or grandkids it will always mean more to them than it will to me but I have seen guys that will run it up on them because they are family of the estate I think that is wrong. I found my granddads old farm truck a 1961 chevy C60 that he bought new at a farm sale about a year ago not an estate sale (bankruptcy) it did not run and had been sitting in a shed for about 10 years I made my mind up when I left home I would own that truck went to the sale stood all day last thing to sell every body new the trucks history still had grandads name on the bed and an old man run it to twice what the 1979 running truck beside it brought because the owner of the truck seen me bidding on it made me so mad didnot have a problem paying what it was worth but I knew who was taking that truck home so I think you didi the right thing for sure.

You did the right thing. The tractor stays in the family where it belongs, and you did your part to bring the price up to the fair market value. I have often stopped bidding when I notice I am bidding against a good friend, but anymore I figure my money is as good as his and all is fair. That rule does not apply when it is family.

You did the right thing. If you had kept bidding and out bid the nephew you would feel like a heel. If the nephew dropped out and you still wanted it then you could have jumped back in. It's just a tractor to you, it's family to him.
