Have International Tractor 574 which loses power when going up steep hills - any idea about what's wrong with it?

Lynn, on the gas engine [if thats what you have] there's a mesh screen in the top of the sediment bowl, there's another where the fuel line hooks to the carb. If they're plugged up, you may have to drain & clean the tank too. Does sound like it's short of fuel when you need it most.

I think Phil has the right idea. I have had the same trouble(not lady bugs) with my 584 and dads 484. I think that is something that those tanks have trouble with. We just took the fuel lines loose at the tank and cleaned everything as best we could and it cleared right up.

Check to see if fuel is able to flow freely from the fuel tank. My 885 did the same thing. I was bush hogging a pasture and on the level or downhill it ran well but going uphill it would lose power. If I pushed the clutch in and idled back and let it sit for a minute it would rev back up and run ok for a bit then lose power again. Finally it wouldn't run at all and i had to tow it back to the shop with my CASE 630. Figured it must be the injector pump and called the dealer. He said sounded like it was a cloged fuel line. So I drained all the fuel and blew out the lines etc. Longer story not quite as long... the fuel tank was full of Lady Bugs. Must have been hundreds that came out with the last of the fuel.
Those little beetles get into any open space when the weather turns cold and I figure they got in to the hose of my bulk tank and I pumped them into my tractor's tank. I put a piece of panty hose on end of fuel nozzle and always check it when I fill the tractor now. Fuel man told me that they seem to love diesel for some reason. Don't know if that is your problem or not but check to see if there is anything clogging fuel flow from the tank to pump. Under light loads or idling enough fuel may get through for it to run ok.
Phil
