I once had a 4.3 in one of my trucks. What do you mean by chattering? From From reading your post , this problem started happening at the time you tromped on the gas , and passed a car. After letting off the gas , it stopped. But still makes the noise at certain RPM's. I've had that problem 3 times , with the same truck(4.3 engine). Sounds to me that what you're hearing is the fan blade hitting the plastic shroud. Very Very hard to see marks. Look very closely. Mine scraped off to one side , near the bottom (don't remember which side). This happened , due to motor mount going bad (also very hard to see). I over worked the little truck by loading heavy/pulling trailer. Machanic friend told me 4.3 has weak motor mounts. I'll bet if the guy with the suburban had the same problem , they replaced the motor mounts at the time of rebuild. Maybe it didn't need rebuilding , just motor mounts. Hope this helps

checked for a colapsed exhaust pipe== had it on a V/8 got so it wouldn't run good at anything above a low RPM found a double wall pipe had colapsed in side sawed a slot in the pipe behind the cat and it cleared up-- sawed out the piece " about 2' " and put in another piece ran find- don't know if this is your prob but worth a try

Probably has two oxygen sensors screwed into the exhaust pipes under the vehicle. Remove them temporarily and see if it runs more normally. If it does, the catalytic converter is clogged and needs replacing. A clogged cat converter will cause codes for bad MAF and EGR- even if they are OK.

Had a Dodge truck do that once. Turned out to be a module related to the rev limiter causing it to interupt sooner than it should. What a racket!

#1 Your dealer's policy is to radomly throw parts at a problem, hope to eventually find the problem but certianly send you the bill. #2 Typing is all caps isn't a good idea. This problem could be anything from a failing harmonic balancer, flex plate, torque convertor, etc. The output from the OBDII must be recorded before, during & after the chattering. Swings in the map, tps, egr, knock sensor, timing variences,O2 voltages etc should provide some clues.

how are you going to get an OBD II reading during the chatter? Ignition off and key in the ON position IIRC. All codes being thrown by the system are stored in the computer.

Ask around for a reputable independent mechanic and take it to him.

OBDII is not read with flashing lights on the dash while the engine is shut down. That system passed before 1995.

You can read all the engine data on an OBDII vehicle by plugging in an analyzer or a "flight recorder" and driving. When the chattering begins, you hit the "freeze" or "record" and it takes a picture of all the data. It would be a good idea to take it to a reputable, well-equipped mechanic who can interpret the data.
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Thankyou for answering Revredneck. He just wasn't going to listen to what I had to say.

Hard to figure people out these days. Did you not test drive the vehicle at the dealership before you paid the bill for all those uneeded parts?? Don't mean to add insult to injury but we as paying customers do have an obligation to hold these people accountable for something! I assume you explained the problem correctly to them and they changed all them parts and told you it was fixed. Why else would you pay the bill? If you test drove it first you would have known it didn't fix the problem and you would NOT have to pay them!!Let them take you to small claims!! They WILL lose the case! Let them take the parts off if they want , but why pay for something you didn't need?? These people aren't idiots , they know exactly what they are doing and they know when they finally get to the REAL problem (and they know what it is)you will have spent $500 more than you needed to. The usual justification (which most customers buy)is that "well it probably needed all that anyway". Sickening to see these crooks get away with this every day. Good luck and get educated before you get broke!
