Fordson 12 volt con, kit

Hi, if i put a 12 volt alternator kit on my fordson tractor would i have to change the starter since the tractor runs with the positive of the battery to the ground. I know a alternator grounds by bolting it to the engine so how will that work with the old starter. Thanks.

Most of the older starters With "Field/Armature"
windings will turn the same direction reguardless of plarity that is hooked to them . The only way you can change rotation is to change dircetion of current flow in one of the windings Fields or Armature not both. I have done this to make Motors
for a winch from a 56 Ford starter "or like" using four starter solonids to reverse the current
through the armature while keeping the same through the fields . you can use a 6 volt on 12 volts I have seen them last for years .

Thanks Bus Driver, the only problem is, is that I sold the tractor 4 years ago and now all it does is sit out in the weather getting no use..:>(

Hasn't been started but a couple of times in the last year.

Unless the alternator is a special, they are almost alllll lll Negative ground. If its a coil ignition instead of a mag, it (coils primary polarity) should be matched to the ground configuration and if you use an ammeter its polarity sensitive n needs wired correct or else it would read bass ackwards. As Bob noted the starter will still turn the same direction regardless of battery polarity.

The only starters that are battery-polarity sensitive are certain MODERN units that use a permanent magnet field. NO polarity worries with your's.
