Hi, I have purchased a second White 4-150 tractor, but the main (lower) driveshaft is worn out and needs replaced. I'm told that it's been discontinued, and the local parts dealer can't get it for me. The local salvage yard also lacks one. I was wondering where I could get a new/refurbished one, or where to have one rebuilt. Additionally, approximate price estimates would be useful. Thanks!

I also don't know where in IA you are but. There is a machine shop in Algona that does driveshaft work, Algona Machine and Supply or something like that.

In Spencer, Spencer Auto Parts does good driveshaft work.

Otherwise ask the service or parts manager at a local Heavy Duty truck dealer in your area.

What part of it is worn out? If it is just the U joints you can buy them and put them in. If the yokes are bad you should be able to get new ones and have a good machine shop cut the old ones out and weld the new ones in. We have a semi truck dealer in town and they have usually match up any end.

If all they have to do is replace the yokes it should cost more than parts and an hour labor.

Actually, it's the middle (looks about like a 1000RPM PTO shaft) that's worn out. Thing slips randomly when you're out in the field and sounds like somebody is hitting the cab floor with an 8# hammer.

I'm not sure where in IA you are, but there is a place in Rock Island, IL called Gray Machine Shop. They build drive shafts and could build one for you with no problem. Had one built for a semi there once, about an hour or so. Friendly people.

I onetime purchased all the parts from a Truck part dealer (Spicer) and made my own drive shaft for a jeep. It even turned out pretty well balanced. Now I figure a tractor driveline would spin a lot slower so....

Look in the local phone book under driveshafts, truck repair, etc. As long as you have the ends, you can have one made for not much.

see if you have a truck repair shop in your area, they should be able to send the driveshaft out to get rebuilt. usually cost 200 or so.
