Hi Guys,

As you might recall, a number of days ago, I dug out my old welder and torch that had been in storage for way, way too long. Put 'em away in February of 1983, just a few days before my "unwanted" sell-out.

Anyhoo, yesterday I finally rounded up some full bottles of propane and oxygen to give the old torch a try too. Just like the welder, the darned thing works every bit as good as the day I put it away.

Wish all things in my life were this constant and dependable. :>)

Hi Gang;
Yes I have some very unhappy memories of that time too. Interest rates at 15%, house loan at 18%. Got made redundant and worked for cash on potato harvester to make grocery money. Mr Ford wanted his money NOW for the car loan. Was out of work to 5 months, used all savings & took 2 years to get square. Still here moaning & giving wife h*ll and buying old tractors ! LoL
Cheers David

Thanks for posting so often, and with great pictures too - you're one of the mainstays of this board (and the Farmall board).

I don't quite follow this, why were they put away in first place. Sounds like lenders were after all items. Farming has almost always taken another job or wife working for the ins etc to make it go. It still does today also in most cases. even thou crop rices have risen some the net really did nt change as suppliers just raise there stuff also. I mean seed corn at $300.00 bag plus, rent $250.00 plus stuill very little there. Off farm job is still needed. No rain here and I have lost first cutting of alfalfa on my hay farm here. Thank god for the machinery assemble business repair

Hey RickL,,I follow it quite well-The prime rate in 1978 was about 6 percent and by the summer of 1980 in was 18 to 20 percent,,,,,Im not going to bash you because you had to have lived it to understand it.

Mornin Allan

These newer welders have circuit boards in them similar to your computer. Bet if you leave them set for 20 years they won't hold up.

National Radar looks like your getting more moisture. Is it raining there?

Oh Yeah,

Nice steady drizzle. Supposed to rain all day and all night.

Belly deep grass, chest high hay and a bin busting wheat crop. I can dream, can't I? :>)

Kind of did a double take there at first. Thought it was you tho. :>)

Heck, the way this farm thing is turning out, first the recovery of the manure spreader and then the welders, I'm really contemplating calling the ex-wife.

Naw, that would probably be pushing it a little. :>)

Whats the spreader recovery story Allan?

Musta missed it somewhere.

I also was about two meals away from a sellout in the 80's. Was able to refinance the farm and hang on.Along with getting an off farm job.

Oh,

The other day I stumbled across a real clean Farmhand 6-ton Power Wagon. Wheeled in and bought 'er on the spot. :>)

When I went broke, banks were folding like a long series of card tables. Nobody but nobody was loanin' anything and they all were hangin' on by the skin of their teeth just for their own survival.

Actually, in hindsight, it turned out to be a good thing for me. Kind of a traumatic process tho. :>)

Yea! those 80s were tuff. There was a saying "suicide is an option" . I sold half and kept half of mine. Found a city sucker. Bar tended for food and bed. Then 5 days in hospital with heart attack cost me an other 160 acres.
