TRACTOR, but what in the name of time was it

I was turning onto a county road here in South Western Ontario this afternoon, when I saw a lime green tractor coming, wide front with loader and probably the same dimensions as a 60 hp American row crop. Had a cab with white roof. It looked like it had no engine or rad, just a heavy box beam rail from torque tube to the wide front end. I waited while it drove by, it did have an engine somewhere and a snappy sounding 4 or 6 cylinder diesel. I watched him stop at a stop sign, then make a left and start away. This thing had to be a smooth shifting power shift. I could hear it shifting but he went through about 4 gears in 10 seconds.

The design looked European, but that whole power train must have been tucked under that cab. What was it? I've never seen anything like it.

Or it could have been one of those Montanas.

Hugh,

The new Unimog's are quite an interesting vehicle....the steering can be anywhere you want it...the whole thing slides on a rail...the cab has even joined the 21st century.....sold I believe through the Mercedes owned Frieghtliner dealership's

regards.

Hugh, yep I think they were sold in Canada a long time before Agco took them over....so an 80's or early 90's model could be right....that GP series was unique in it's design with the rear mount underslung engine / tranny.....could spec it out with front linkage and p.t.o also..... .one of the first "systems" tractors along with that other German systems tractor....the Unimog.

Roger: I've had limited experience with Unimog, trying to find reverse was the major chalange of the day. 30 years ago a German guy hired my truck to pull two of these from Lake Placid NY to Nova Scotia. My driver delivered one on his way home, and I was to deliver the other one.

I decided to transfer it from my hi deck trailer to low bed, as I wanted lo bed for my return home. I never did find reverse amoung those 72 forward and 36 reverse gears. In the end I had to back lo bed under front of hi deck trailer and drive it forward onto the lo bed.

I said 30 years ago, that is aprox. these machines had been used at the Lake Placid Winter Olypics and apparently were auctioned after the event was over. One of these machines was a tractor with centerline cab about mid way between axles, the other was cab over truck design, but both had same chassis. Both had Cat II hitch and IPTO front and back. If I recall correctly they were Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel.

Sounds liek a Fendt tractor made in Germany the transmission could have been an infinitly variable it is almost a hydrostat but yet it is not we got to drive them when in Germany will run about 40 MPH and very smooth
the web address has some picture of the new tractors.

Clint: I think you have it, read what I said to Roger. Fendt makes sence as we have quite a strong Fendt dealership here. Most of the the conventional Fendt are quite new here but there are oldies as well.

Hugh, that sounds like a Fendt, one of the GT series....engine and tranny under the cab....mono beam frame to front axel....underslung cultivation ready or sprayer tank on frame or as you saw with loader...great front vision, maybe one of those new IVT stepless trannys..?

Roger; My first reply to you didn't post for some reason. I think you are probably right on Fendt, it's older than your suggesting. I would take it to be 1970s or 80s vintage, maybe 90s but it didn't look that new. Very much the same tire size and wheel base of a Farmall 656 or Oliver 1650. Fendt also makes sence as there is quite a strong dealership in the area, and I'm judging there has been for some time. I only moved here 5 years ago, my guess Fendt was here long before I was. I had just never seen this configuration before.
