I am helping a freind rebuild his deck
Length of the nailer on the house is a real 2by 8 and is bit less then 30 feet. A couple peices are used.
The outside stringer (I dont know if terminology is right) is also bit less then 30 feet and up on 4 piers. The longest span from pier to pier is 9 feet.....
I wish to know what sise lumber to use at this span. Double 2 by 8 s or double 2 by 10s'
..... .The Joists will be 2 by 6s' at 16 centers.
The ends will be what ever is used on the front spans ..... ..... . The width of the deck is bit under 7 feet..... ..... ....Thank you

I have built 5 decks in my time and all are still standing. The last one I did is for myself which is my back deck which is all cedar. He is what I did. 2X10s (doubled up) and these are 7feet on center. then I used 2X8s 12" on center. I used 5/4 X 6 cedar planks for the top boards. (real sturdy, and I dont have a hot tub on it) I dont recommend 2X6s for joists unless they are 12" on center and you use 2X4s for the top planks. Good luck.

A few questions:
Is the beam recessed underneath the floor joists. i.e. 1' or 2'.or is it at the outside of the rim joist(box if you will). What are you using for decking 5/4x6 or 2x6 or composite materials?
2x6 is enough to span this. You will experience some deflection though sagging or springing.
I recommend a 3 ply 2x 10, or 3 ply 2x12 beam.It depends on your budget.Bigger is stronger.I am a professional carpenter with 25 years in the trade.
Email me if you have any other questions will be glad to help.

If you are going to place the header across the top of your 4x4s (or whatever size you are placing on your cement piers) you would be fine with a double 2x10. The disadvantage with this type of system is that you need to support the whole assembly from doing 'knee action' (nothing holding it from tipping over). If you are bolting 2 beside the 4x4s, you would need 2x12s. The extra 'meat' should allow you to get enough bolts thru it to help it from collapsing. (This system is one way to assure the whole assembly will not just tip over under your joists.) Greg

First off, stringers are used on stairs (..FYI...), and i'm THINKING you're talking about the BEAMS between the posts.

IF you are only just walking on the deck with no enormous amounts of loads, i would think that 2 2x8s nailed together are good enough for the beams...

HOWEVER, I do NOT think that 2x6's are good enough for the joists no matter if put 16 inches on center or 4 inches on center. My reasoning is that a 2x6 with a load placed in the middle of it will be quite bouncy. You MIGHT want to upgrade the joists to 2x8's on 16 inch centers for the sake of NO BOUNCING.

BE sure to nail the joists where you can and use the U-shaped joist hangers...
