I am looking for a new car, new too me anyhow.. mostly just too give me somthing too work on for rainy days.. (and don"t bother telling me too get a tractor, don"t need one) and I am REALLY liking the looks of the eclipse... and from what I have seen and from doing some looking around I can get one from a junk yard for around $500.. not running but in OK shape.. are these cars halfway good cars? or just 100% junk? thanks for the input! Tim

I had a 1990 Laser RS Turbo with a 5-speed. It was a really fun car that looked nice and got decent milage with some fun. I got about 25-30 mpg depending on how I drove it. It had 130k when I got it and ran perfect when I sold it with 170k on the clock. Biggie is to check the timing belt, when they let go major engine damage follows... they are an interference engine. I would love to pick up another sometime. Personally I would pick one over a fox body just because they are different and IMO look better, just my .02.

For whatever it's worth, some Mitsubishi executives are looking at jail time in Japan for not recalling defective vehicles dating back to the 70s or 80s. Seems some people got killed, but they thought a recall would hurt their reputation for quality.

Weren't you trying to decide between a Charger and a 280 ZX awhile back?

With the Eclipse, I assume you're talking about the 1st generation ones, like 1990-94? Anyway, that's what I have experience with, so here goes.

A good site to check is www.dsm.org And there's a ton more info out there on the web for these cars. They are the same as the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser.

You could get them with a 1.8L, a 2.0L, and a 2.0L Turbo engine, with front wheel drive or all wheel drive.

I've got the 2.0 Turbo AWD. The engine seems to be pretty bulletproof. Burns just a little bit of oil. No blue smoke or anything, just have to add some every once in awhile. Like someone else said, I think Mitsu's are known for that.

It's fast, and its fun. Surprisingly enough, you can fit quite a bit of stuff into the hatchback with the seats down. With the Turbo AWD, the gas mileage aint the greatest, but its OK. The achilles heal on these cars is the manual transmission. After awhile, they all seem to grind going into gear. Ask anyone whos ever had one, you'll probably hear the same.

There's a ton of aftermarket stuff out there for these cars.

As far as availability, I don't know where you're at, but here in N Illinois, it seems like all of the ones in the junkyard already have the engines taken out of them--the 2.0L and 2.0L turbos are pretty popular to stuff into other cars. Now, if you're looking for somethign to work on, I always see these cars for sale on Craigslist. It seems like there's at least one a week that pops up on there--and the story is always the same:

"This is my Eclipse/Talon/Laser. I did these mods to it, and now it doesn't run right/doesn't run at all, and I need money, so its for sale."

Sometimes it's just something simple to fix, and you can get a good deal. Other times, someone has beat the thing and the motor is junk. You know how it goes--too many kids trying to be "Fast and Furious."

Anyway, if you don't get an Eclipse, keep an eye on Craigslist anyway, there always seems to be at least a coupel of decent deals on there.

Many Mits engines are relatively short-lived. Piston/ring/bore wear is an issue... Ever notice how many Mits cars smoke ??

Tim, i had two and i dated a couple of gals that had them, the two i had i bought really cheap to commute to work and school, i paid around 2500 for both and put the miles on them, they got good gas mileage and were easy to maintane, i know that you got a little bit of hot rodding in your blood, remembering the post about your dads car, but if i was going to build somthing on rainy days i'd pick either a old fox body mustang or a late80's-early 90's camero, both were good cars

well, if I could find a fox body around here for cheap, I would buy it.. but I looked and looked for one for under a grand, and no luck so far.. and I couldn't stand too be seen driving a bowtie.. :0) all my buddys are ford or dodge fans ya' see.. and as far as a little bit of hot rodding in my blood, I think it's more like 100% and no, I have not gotten one ticket yet.. (or any wrecks for that matter) Tim
