Local neighbor kid has hogs and is using an old diesel fuel skid tank on a trailer to haul water to the barn. Tank was used untill 4 years ago or so. I know the local feed mill cant sell plastic barrels for water if they have had chemicals in them, so this is no different. This kid is not the brightest bulb, but I cant see the water being clean from that tank.

Hi Ta,

I think the easiest way to put your mind at rest, is look at the waters surface for a oil shien as oil floats on water. The nose should also smell the diesel oil on the water surface.

A white styrofoam cup full of water would also be a good indicator. Wipe your finger around the tank wall at the water level.

No oil, then I would think it would be clean enough for domestic use for animals.

IMO, that would be doubtful that"s it"s clean enough.

I know of at least 2 bunches of cattle killed with wet distillers grain hauled in old gasoline tankers. I've used old fuel tanks before but always had them steamed out for 12 hrs with boiler steam at the distillery before I used them.

My concern lies with the residual fuel oil in there that would take a long time to get out. I can imagine it would kill your tomatoes. i cant see it being non contaminated water going to those pigs from that tank.

I have a 500 gallon tank that I use to haul water. I have it mounted to a running gear. No clue who built it. My grandpa gave it to me when I took up faming. I also use plastic barrels that also had chemicals in them once. Nothing happen to my critters around here when I gave them water from my barrels.
