From the Ford camp:

I have a 1997 F250 Extended cab 4x4 automatic with 4.10 gears. Summer time I get 16-18 mpg empty at highway speeds or mixed driving. Winter time I get 2 mpg less. The truck now has 240,000 miles with annual maintenance ~$1000/year.

My friends each had identical units, but they got better fuel economy and ran even more miles (>300k miles).

Good luck

The 12-valve Cummins with a manual transmission will return the best fuel mileage in my experience. Brother has an early 98 12-valve 5-speed that makes up to 23 or 24 mpg empty at 60mph. Loaded it will drop to around 17mpg on the long hauls as long as you are willing to lose some speed on the hills rather than hold it to the floor. Longevity is also a plus, I know of several with well over 300,000 miles on them that have needed minimal repairs other than normal maintenance... check to see if the dowel pin upgrade has been done!

Good advice on the dowel pin. When I got my "98 12V the front seal was leaking a little. When I had it repaired at the diesel shop they did the "fix" on the dowel pin. It was starting to work its way out. If it falls out it can be bad news.

That's disgusting! You all's full size diesel trucks get as good a milage (empty) as my 4.3 Jimmy S15 2wd.

Yep, I hear you on that. I've got a 2000 s-10 4x4 with a 4.3 and the mileage is pitiful.

In my opinion here after looking over what each engine is i went with a Cummins as it is and inline with less moving parts longer stroke direct injecton and i can still work on mine with out the aid of a high dollar scan tool , But i did make one mistake and sorta knew that going in . I have a 95 Dodge 3500 4X4 cummins 5 speed but the bad part is mine has 4.10 gears all the way around and this kills my fuel milage along with road speed . After i made my mistake i advised my buddys that were buying dodges with the cummins not to get the 4.10 gears and go with the 3.54 and they do much better on fuel milage then mine does and have better topend speed and pull vary well The one truck we use on the grain trailer and she will take anywhere from 320 bushel to 352 bushel of corn and plum flat out and run with it up and down our hills hitting the scale at up to 36000lbs . Yea i know that a bunch . As for there fuel milage it is across the board from 12 to 20 from empty to fully loaded .

I just hauled a tractor 500 miles last Friday. I was using a '97 Dodge 5.9 Cummins. My trailer weighs 5600 lbs. and the tractor was probably 8000 lbs. more. I checked the mileage at each fill up. Pulling the trailer alone, I got 16.9 mpg. With the tractor on the trailer, I got 13.2 mpg. The trip was from the Detroit Mi. area to West Central Illinois. I ran 70 to 72 miles per hour on the Interstates. The truck alone usually gets 20 to 21 mpg. As far as power, it's always been able to do whatever I have asked of it. Hope this helps.
