We just started making dust on Sunday after I came home empty handed from a consignment auction 1/2 hour away. I made the 1st pass in the field that got seeded down then smoothed over 2 more feilds so we have a place to haul some manure.

Dad and i saw the weather for tonight and he decided he should really try to get the oats on before the rain came so he hopped on the 1855 and did 2 more passes over the feild to get it nice and smooth for the haybine and baler. third party image Then he went to get the alfalfa and red clover from the feed mill (we clean our own oats most years) and got going.

third party image He finished up and got the drill in the shed around 2:00, before I left for work and it just started to drizzle on my way in around 2:30. Now at 1:00 AM its a pretty steady rain so hopefully the oats will shoot outta the ground. I know they love the cold damp a heckuva lot better than corn.

Had some corn sit in the ground for 2-3 weeks last year before it came up, then we had to replant about 1/2 of it.

I think it's gonna be another 2 weeks before we try to plant any corn- farmer's almanac puts the best time for us around the 15th or so. Seems accurate enough, ussually about when we try to be stared any way. Too early like last year ('bout the 1st week of may) and we just get burnt.

Hey Donovan, is that area around Little Chute or Appleton? My brother lives there and it sure looks like his area. Lots of new houses and development going on around there. Everytime we visit it seems like the urban sprawl is getting bigger. They lived around Kaukauna for a while too. There is a paper plant over there that just wreaks with a very bad smell. Later.

Yup, just south of Kaukauna. Those houses are in Kaukauna's city limit, we're in the town of Buchanen.

By the way- That smell isn't that bad on the south side, just tells us when it's gonna rain... We used to have middle school footbal practice right down by that mill- You don't know a stink until you're right on top of it....

Thanks for rubbing it in! It was just about getting dry enough yesterday to get on the oat ground,but the forcast didn't look good. No sense getting out there until I can get it worked and in in one fell swoop. Worked a little corn ground,but it's raining like a cow p*@$#&g on a flat rock here in Michigan right now. Maybe by Thursday or so. Good thing I don't get frustrated as easy as I used to.At least the cows are still calving pretty steady,so I'm staying busy.

Should be getting plenty over there now, we got about 1 1/4 inches. Some of the oats is under a little water but it should be drained down by tonight or tomorrow.

Nice looking Ollie, how's parts availibility for those? I really like the looks of the 1500-1800's. Is that wheat in the background or just grass?

Parts really aren't any trouble at all to find. Hardest part to get is the engine oil filter for the 18 because we have to go 1/2 hr to the dealer just to get it. The auto parts store has filters for the rest of the tractors, just not the 18.

I sure would like to plant some oats for hay, I'm in west Tn. Does anyone have an experience with oats this far south this late [for us] I grew up in WI an it is great to see some people still growing oats, for some reason one of my favorites. We used an Oliver 70 and Oliver Superior drill on tall steel wheels. My nephew still has 3 old 70's twoo of them have been in our family since new and 2 have consecutive serial #'s THanks for letting me ramble, Mostly wonderabout oaats down here. Scottz

wish we would have gotten done, got about 30 acres in before the clay started building up on the press wheels causing us to quit. got about 45 acres of oats to go yet. will be at least several days till it dries enough now.. got some bean ground on the sand to work in the meantime. hope your spring goes well, Pat in Wis

You bet!! None of those houses were there 5 years ago to the north. Some are good neighbors and respect us, some are typical city folk who are just plain D-U-M-B

i hear ya! the brothers i worked for rented 50 or acres that was in middle of small town. some of the stuff people did that lived next to it was nuts! one jerk trimmed his trees and threw the mess in corn. there wasn't anything broke on combine but it made for some peaed off guys and lots of bad words. when one brothers f-i-l farmed it neighbor kids made fox and goose trails in wheat that was ready to combine. then their parents were mad at "mean old farmer" for yelling at their brats er kids.

2 yers ago the neighors decided to pump their swimming pool out into our field the first fall they were out there. We needed to chop corn out of that feild the next day. It really didn't make us happy and dad went and explained to them that if they paid of the water from the city, the city can have it back. At the very least, to call us and clear it with us before just going ahead and doing it....

Only good thing was that we already had it opened up and I could avoid the new sink hole for the most part.

Others called the cops when I was trimming trees on our side of the fence... Long story and still trying to haul manure on the holidays in front of their house...

I�m also waiting to finish up my oats. Has to dry up some to get back into the fields and finish up. After that is done I will plant corn.

What kind of drill is that Don? I see a cultipacker and what other implement being pulled behind it? I just use a packer behind my Oliver Superior drill.

That would be a 24x7 John Deere Vanbrunt FB. We have 2 cultipackers behind it, one with a long pole so they don't smash into each other on a turn. One is 7' wide and the other is about 6 1/2', and the drill is 12' wide so it makes a good combination.
