Dreaming of horsepower.....ie round balers

Yes, I am daydreaming again.

I've got two D17s and a Ford 5000 tractor. I am making small square bales, but sometime in the future I think that I will be wanting to make round bales on shares and selling my portion of the hay, or something along those lines.

I know that there are some round balers which I could use with the 5000, though it might be marginal on some of our Ozark hills.

Sooooo, what I am wondering about is a bigger tractor capable of running round balers including newer balers which can netwrap bales. What I am mostly looking for is value for my money. Probably this means an open station tractor and an older baler which could be upgraded later as more money becomes available.

Okay, okay. I will also admit to a bit of desire for just a bigger tractor.

The timeline on this type of purchase is 12 months to 12 years or more. The budget is as small as reasonable. I definitely lean toward Allis Chalmers. An older friend of mine in MN used AC tractors, so I got used to them and since I respect him, I guess he had good reasons.

So, any suggestions about models to look for? 185 or 190? What horsepower range offers the best value? What kind of price range to look at for 75-110HP diesel, with or without loader?

Thanks for any tips.

Christopher

The AC 190XT is one of the best tractors I have ever used on a round baler.Plenty of power and the hand clutch works real well when tieing the bales. I use two 851 New Holland round balers to bale with they are pretty much trouble free and real inexpensive to buy.My 1650 Oliver diesel also works good with the balers and I also have a Long 910 (8011 Zetor) that does good on the 851
it has 16 forward and 8 reverses so you always have a gear. Actually have 2 or them and paid $2000 each

My friend uses one of larger IHC 12 & 14XX and I think 15XX Not sure of the exact numbers right now. But they do a lot of Haying and ave found the big IHCs to be pretty good tractors for it. they both square and round balers. and a brand new 3 wire square baler.

Well, I've got a later model 5000, but the engine was changed out some time ago by a previous owner for an earlier production model diesel. I'm glad to hear that it could handle a round baler, even on hills.

And yes, I sure would like to get a nice big Allis.

If you've got a later 5000 with the 256 engine, you've already got as much tractor as you'll ever need to run a high capacity 4x4 baler. The late 5000 was close to 70 hp.... That will make a 4x4 baler sing. The earlier 5000 will do just fine too. We've put over 20000 bales thorugh a Class 44S behind a 5610, and believe me, it saw a lot of hills.
If you just want another big old Allis, that's another thing....

My uncle did all his 4x4 round bales with either his IH 574 or his Allis Chalmers 6060. He used both tractors, never did hear which he though was better, but if I had to guess, it was problably his 6060, which had 60hp. Theres alot of big old high horsepower iron kicking around thats cheap, trouble is, they are also thirsty. If you like Allis you ould get a 7000 or any of the series since they are cheap, however, I believe all the ones that used the 426ci engine were equipped with a 75 gallon fuel tank, so keep that in mind. The 7000 used the 301ci, which is also the same motor used in the 190 and 200. What really stinks about the big tractors is they use alot of fuel even while your trying to do a little job. I agree with the others about a big tractor being overkill for a small round baler. Save the big tractor idea until you want to upgrade to the big squares, then you'll start seeing minimum horsepower requirments of 150hp+.

OK, you want 100 hp and an Allis. Forget the 190, its a live PTO but not a true independent. Go with a 7000. Go pretty cheap for the power.

If you want to know about 7000s, let me know, I have a 7000 black belly, and I have done quite a bit of repairs to get her back to good condition (she sat around too long and seals dried out...) Let me know, e-mail is open

I don't know why folks think they have to have all these 100+ HP tractors to pull this or that. The tractors you have will pull a roller just fine.

Well first off you have a tractor or 2 that will handle a round baler. I know more then one guy in my area that use D17s to pull NH850s and have been doing it for many years. Ya the D17 is just big enough to do it but they will. Now if you want cheap HP I have just the tractor for you, diesel, 85HP, live PTO wide front and power steering. E-mail is open if you want to know more.
