Ok, inherited a chest freezer from my grandmother, FULL OF FOOD!Everything from corn to strawberries, some chicken stew and hash,a few things of ice cream, etc, etc..... most of this is packaged for one person since she lived alone, gramps dies in 93 and some of the stuff on the bottom is that old.She dated some of it, but a good bit isnt, so my question is..... without knowing the dates on some it, would you eat it? Some of it I can tell is freezer burnt, but some of it looks goodMost of the okra is shriveled up so its going, same with the squash in it.The corn all looks good, and the few frozen dinners she had a re still in date. Just trying to fiqure out what I should trash and what I should keep before trying to move this freezer. We had a freezer whan I was growing up but Mom and Dd did the work, and we didnt have enough in there to worry about whether it got burnt or not, and Mom canned most everything she could.

If you don't trust it send it my way. Nothing beats Grandmas home cooking.

I would hate to risk getting sick.. I know it seems a shame to throw the food out, but not worth the risk, IMHO.. I once had food poisoning, it was a very unpleasant experience, to say the least..

Just a thought, I also inherited a freezer full of food from my grandparents, and was told by the family to open each and every package. It was a common hiding spot for cash. Regards,

Dennis

If you wouldn't feed it to your puppy dog then think again. Frozen foods are good for about one year. When I freeze stuff it is in a Zip bag with water. Thus there is no way air can get to it. Canned foods are good for about the same but high sugar can go for two. Jam and such. Check your Ball canning book. I do some canning for the fun of it. Enter stuff in two farm fairs. Sorry but I wouldn't trust it. Molds will usualy make the jar lid lose seal. SOME of them will NOT. Prep in food is VERY important and not to be messed with. jeffcat

Jeffcat, most canned foods will keep for several years. I am amazed that any old people are left at all. They ate lots of hogs to include cooking in pure lard and put up all their own food. I can all my own vegetables and even some meat and if it is not sealed the lid will pop up and down when pushed on. I have lots of stuff here now that is 3 and 4 years old and is just as good as it was to start with. I have eaten this stuff for 45 years and have never been sick one day. Other than a dentist I haven't been to a doctor since I was discharged from the service. I do all my cooking in cast iron, which I believe is better for you than the enamal on other types of cookware. My mother in law also believes that is why me my wife or my kids are never sick.

Rarely is food dangerous after proper cooking. Quality (flavor, appearance) may decline with lengthy frozen storage. I would cook it and taste. Eat if the taste suits you.

Ask yourself the one question.....? Did the power ever go out for long periods of time at Grandma's house, if so throw out the food which will give you food poisoning.

It won't hurt you,but may be freezer burned. If it is you will be able to tell it after thawing, it will look dried out.

If you don't trust it, throw it out. It isn't worth getting sick. LE
