I have a 7.3L non turbo diesel in a ford E350 bus .Whwn it sits for a couple of days it would start and then stall. If you revved it up right away it would miss and sputter than run OK.This is hard on it when the engine is cold. Now after a few hours it wont keep running. when it quits you have to bleed the fuel system starting with the filter and then the injectors, but it is hard to get to them wihout taking off the cowlinside the van.And just before you get it bled out the batteries start to die off.Iheard before i had this problem that there might be a check valve in the system that may be stuck open.Any help would be great.
Ron

My F250 was doing something like that and it had several things wrong, first those fuel and return lines have a rubber sleeve under all of those brass nuts and even if they have never been off they go bad. Second was the rubber hose that connects the steel line from the tank to the transfer pump was cracked.Third the rubber hose I used to bypass the water separator was cracked. And I have also seen a hole rubbed in the side of the steel line from the tank along the frame by the exhaust manifold. I had also replaced all those rubber return lines between the injectors and orings under the tees also.

Sure sounds like an air leak. Maybe a bad fuel line letting air in?

Not as bad as you are saying, but I had the same thing twice with WIX Filters, because they don't fit right.Never had any problems with MotorCraft in over 200,000Miles.Might check your filter type.

Ford IH diesels had a problem with the Schrader-valve in the filter assembly going bad and leaking air. This tends to cause fuel bleed-back in the lines overnight. Also - the Stanadyne system uses two check-valves to prevent fuel drain-back - one in the injection pump itself, and also one in the fuel pump. A broken/rusty/leaking line anywhere between the fuel transer-pump and tank can also cause the problem.

Don't forget to mention how the "O" rings and the plastic "TEES" they seal leak on the injector fuel return system, allowing air to get in.

Also, if there is a water separator ahead of the fuel filters, tucked away in an out of sight place, it may have a pinhole rusted in it, also allowing fuel to seep out, and air to get in.
