I wonder if they are one in the same as Burdock, the pesky plant with the giant elephant ear like leaves, and those velcro like balls when they mature that stick to anything cloth, ones hair, etc. The seeds are in the middle of those round clingy buds that flower, then dry out. We used to have them all over, a patch of those would slow down the '64 4000 Ford with a 5 foot rotary cutter on it. Same plant, I have also heard of recent interest in the root, basically one long tap root, when left until the following spring, the entire plant will pop right out, but don't shake it, bump or knock it around, the seeds fall right out very easily, I usually take all the previous years ones I find, carefully pile and burn, though they are not prevalent here like they were, they sure can grow fast, leaf also looks like Rhubarb, not sure if we are talking about the same thing, only thing that comes to mind
