Is there a way to tell if it is the starter that is bad or the solenoid? The starter sounds tike its spinning but not engaging. Any ideas? Thanks, kyle

If it is indeed spinning, the starter and solenoid are OK. The Bendix drive on the end of the starter shaft is either bad, stuck or stripped. Just clean and lube or replace the drive, not the whole starter.

Never Ever lube Bendix on starter. Clean it with Brake clean and dry it off or it stick when starting the engine.

check the splines on the starter shaft , maybe remove drive and lube splines so it slides freely. Don't forget the bushings too,If your drive has a band around the clutch rollers, soaking in motor oil overnite might loosen up stuck rollers. They are assembled with light grease at the factory , and may get dry and stick.

If the starter spins without engaging the flywheel, the starter drive, aka the Bendix is bad, and needs replacing. The starter won"t spin at all if the solenoid is not working.
