That must be an old Kiekhaefer Merc. All the ones I've seen ran 50:1. Not to mention that the oil available today for two-cycle outboards is far better than what was available back in the '60s.

Just to double-check myself, I googled on "kiekhaefer" and found the web site below. From the site oldmercs.com:

"The currently preferred fuel is the mid grade (89 octane). All post World War II non-racing Mercs (except KB-4's) can operate safely on a 50 to 1 fuel/oil mixture using modern TCW 3 oil. Racing models and the KB-4's should not be run leaner than 25 to 1."

I have a 1976 115 hours on my boat and it runs on the 50-1 mix. I am pretty sure that is what you need to run in yours.

We've used mercs for years at work. All the two strokes in the last twenty years we've had them were 50:1. The older ones specified a richer mixture but that was based on the two stroke oils of the era the engine was made not on how it was built. I think you can use the 50:1 mix useing the oils made today. Buy the good stuff. Johnson outboards used a 100;1 mix with good results except where engines sat unused for extended periods which would allow internal rusting. So the practice was to use a very rich mix just before layup for the winter.

Neighbor has this. Said he changed plugs and gas line and bulb. Five years old. Won't idle down, spits and pops. Seems to run lean, if you block throttle body it runs better. Fuel injected. We tried 2 sets of plugs. Boat dealer is backed up for 1 month. Silver bass are running. Any info appreciated. Runs fair at higher speeds.

try running a couple of cans of seafoam thru gas this is a double dose but it will clean the fuel system out .

Two stroke or four? The new four strokers are very touchy because they are set at the factory so lean they barely run to be EPA compliant and they can not be adjusted. They don't like ethanol in their fuel or the slightest bit of water or sediment and their filters are rudimentary at best and hard to change. I have added RayCore filters to all our boats and have improved the reliability of our engines signifigantly. You might give it a dose of Sea Foam. I've not used it, but people here have said good things about it.

Call a dealer, but they'll probably tell you what they told me - mix ratio is a function of the oil, not the engine. 50-1 oil works in any 2-cycle engine.

50:1 didn't work in my McCullough 85 cc chain saw. It calls for 28:1 and when my nephew put the Husqvarna's gas into it, it cost us a new power head.

some of the earlier ones ran 24-1, later went 50-1..... need the year. Chances are pretty good that it was 50-1.
