I know there has to be a growing concern with most everyone about the high gas prices! I know in our area they are killing us! I urge all to contact there senators, congressmen, and heck even the dog catcher if it would help us get relief from these prices. I keep hearing about gas prices in England, quite frankly, The United States is not England so I really have no concern about prices over there. I see oil companies making record profits and that tells this ole poor country boy something, we are being gouged and raped at the gas pumps! They should install condum machines on the gas pumps the way we are being raped! All you well off people out there who have a lot of money don't feel the hurt like all us little people.

Here in South Jersey gas has just this week hit $3.oo. I'm sure it will only go higher.

Back when Jimmy Carter was in office he wanted the price of gas in the U.S. to be at the world level. It has taken 30 years. I hope Jimmy is happy.

What kind of truck do you figure on taking $125.00 to fill up? My 24 gallon tank on my F-150 only takes about $60.00 at $3.10 per gallon, I don't run it empty. It ain't cheap, but is only $10.00 more than if gas was $2.50 per gallon. It is hard to justify a second vehicle to save a couple hundred per year. You might get one for that but if it breaks you are in the hole again, not to mention tags and insurance.

My brother's 06 Cummins cost me exactly $100 to fill up when diesel was $3 per gallon, now it is $3.50 up in ND...

I am showing you need a empty 42 gallon tank to get to $125.00 at $3.00 per gallon. Unless you have duel tanks I don"t see it happening, at least not nearly as common as some let on.

If you read my post, I said it cost $100 at $3 per gallon. That is around 33 gallons.

If it were my truck, I'd have the extra 150 gallon chrome diamond plate tank/toolbox in the back so I didn't have to stop to fill so often. So, combine the 38 gallon factory tank with another 150 gallons and a person could have over $500 worth of fuel on board!

If you want to write your congressman and complain about the oil companies, go for it. A better strategy in my opinion would be to complain about congress bending over for the environmentalists and global warming crowd and will not allow more exploration, drilling, and increasing refining capacity in the US. They say we need to be less depemdent. What better way in the short run? Many in congress and the government were saying 20 years ago that taxes on fuel needed to be increased greatly to reduce demand. Well, now the price is where some have wanted it for many years. Do you see any of them taking credit for the high prices? States are looking at charging highway taxes by the mile instead of a tax on the amount of gas one buys. WE NEED TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!

here in CT there is talk about have a gas tax holiday, from Memorial Day till Labor day, this would mean that the state would drop their tax, about 25- 30 cents. At least that is alittle help, I hope they do something soon cause.... its looking like a stay at home summer :(

I'd say a person better get used to it.

Here is a graph of the oil field production I was talking about when we had this discussion a couple of weeks ago. This is just a little old 27,000 acre production field in the Oklahoma Panhandle that I grew up next to. The charts show the oil and gas production meter readings from 1979 to 2005.

That bump up in '03 on oil production came as improved field mapping pinpointed a few new well locations for the producer. It might have also been helped by a high-pressure CO2 injection system that was put in a few years ago to help oil recovery - but basically, it is "licking the bottom of the bowl".

I'm not saying there aren't much larger fields in the world and that some are waiting to be discovered. I AM saying we are using it much faster than it is being created and as this graph shows, fields ARE being depleted.

I was really surprised in the May 3 discussion on this board when Lamborghini904 and I seemed to be in so much the minority that DEMAND is what driving these high prices and how so many guys like Midwest Redneck and 720D think there is "plenty of oil to go around" and "the oil guys have 'gotten to us'" for having our opinions...

I'm not sure where the "plenty of oil to go around" graph is.

And as far as it all being the "evil oil companies fault", all I can say is anyone can buy stock in them! Almost all are publicly traded!

Howard. I tried to tell people here a couple of days ago that the "easy" oil and gas"/"low hanging fruit". There will always be petrochemicals/synthetic fuel/alcohol/hydrogen to use or burn. It's just a matter of source and price. As for urbanites who drive a great hulking SUV on pavement that is always snow ploughed or never gets snowed on. That's called ego.

And everyone pointed and laughed when I sold my F150 and bought a Honda! Guess I'll laugh now... but it still hurts a little at the pump.

My wife and I have been carpooling to work since August. It is somewhat inconvenient for both of us - I have to drive through town instead of on the bypass, and she has to get to work a little early and stay a little late because of my hours. We survive it though and use the cash we have saved to pay extra on loans (should be down to nothing but college loan in about two months).

Current price here is from $2.99 up to $3.45 and will probably go up for the weekend. If it goes past $3.50 I will be investing in an older Honda Civic to set up like the del Sol I had to make 40+ mpg in town. The Accord makes around 28mpg most of the time... since the van only makes 19mpg we haven't driven it much since we bought it in January (only about 800 miles so far!).

All in all I think there are bigger problems to worry about than gas prices, but we are getting gouged at the pump and record profits for oil companies is NOT right.

I have tinkered with my 03 ford f250 crew cab 7.3 diesel and can get up to 25 mpg with a larger exhaust, k&m air filter, and reprograming. Why can't they come from the dealer getting that kind of mileage if I can do it myself? It would help part of the problem.

Because this would violate EPA NOX requirements. To get this mileage you definitely advanced the injection timing and eliminated the exhaust gas recirculation (if this model had this "feature"). Both are necessary to control NOX and hurt fuel mileage. However, I would also do it in a heart beat. Seems to me that a small increase in NOX is worth the compromise for less imported, expensive oil.

What is capitalism at it's finest?? A huge spike in the cost of gasoline due to a huge storm and then the price NEVER comes back down?? Then the oil producers say oil is so high in demand etc. etc. etc. and that is what is causing the high prices?? Wasn't oil just as high in demand a day before Katrina?? That is NOT capitalism, that's gouging! Has anyone compared the oil company profits before and after Katrina? Probably some interesting reading.....

Demand didn't go up after Katrina supply went DOWN.
Supply goes down, demand continues to climb every year, prices go up.
How much oil to we squander keeping troops in Iraq? How many truckloads of plywood have had to go to Louisiana?

I did notice my local Chevy dealership is now pasteing "20MPG" on the fullsize pickups.

If the oil companies make 8 cents a gallon, its too much. Exon reported 9+ BILLION profit for the last quarter, 3 months. That is profit. Sometimes the stations here have had fines because they sold cheaper than the 8 cents over cost that the state mandates. Right now I think they are making up for it in high profits, about 30 cents a gallon for regular over delivery cost. Probably cost 6 or 7 cents for overhead.
Dont we get more oil from South America than the middle east? And I believe Canada is the largest suppplier for M. MN. Anyone got the stats?

I'm glad that nobody brought up the reason for higher gas prices was because people are driving more and the number of gas guzzling vehicles on the road etc. etc. That is only partially true. It still doesn't explain why gas prices skyrocketed after hurricane Katrina and then never came back down. Did people all of a sudden buy bigger vehicles and drive more after Katrina?? What a load. We are all taking it up the u-know-what. They say to drive less, carpool etc. which I have been doing. I carpool to work with my 4-cyl. car and my 8-cyl. truck sits in the driveway. What about when I mow the lawn, or cut hay? Do they want me to tractor pool?! No matter what you do, the gas prices still hurt. A question I also have is, how many people are running up their credit card debt by just swiping the card to pay for gas? I would bet that a lot of people will be getting into trouble with credit card debt simply because of gas. Should be interesting to see what happens...

Foreign countries tax the fuel for health care etc. and people drive 60 mpg cars. Here the rich tax us and the health care takes the rest. Conserve and vote out the predators.

Hang in there Gary, help is on the way. 20+ governors have ask for investigation. That insures that right after labor day there will be several factors that will allow for reduced prices. Right now in my area they are paying 3.03 for delivery and getting 3.33 at the pump. I think the biggest gouge is at the corporate level but they have the old excuse of development to fall back on. A profit of 9 billion for 3 months is not development money. Hang in there, dont sell the farm (tractor).

I also heard there is a proposed lawsuit against OPEC? Also heard the the whitehouse is opposing that lawsuit. Kinda answers a lot of questions about why something hasn't already been done.

I heard that the oil company only makes about 8 cents per gallon, while the government takes in the 35 to 45 cents mentioned above in taxes. I blame the enviromentalists more than anyone. We can't drill off the Florida coast cause it ruins the view, we can't drill in ANWAR, We cant build refineries cause no one wants them in their back yard, and we have tons of special additives and formulations that various states and cities require. Not to mention the cost that EPA, DNR, OSHA, etc tacks on in increased costs.

I think we are paying our dues for letting too many wacko's run things.
