I thought all the talk about the disappearance of bees was a bunch of hoopla, but I have yet to see a SINGLE honeybee this year. It's really weird.

The dutch clover in the yard is in full bloom, and there's not a bee to be found.

I have been watching the bees in our fruit trees in the yard.Although their numbers are down they are active. They dont like cool temps or wind. You have to watch on a hot day. They seem to favor red blossems over white.I usually plant some buckwheat to draw them to the garden.Whatever the cause of their reduced numbers we are in deep trouble without them.Gas prices are small change compared to food shortages.I notice bumble bees are scarce also. You cant eat money or paychecks.Credit cards will be hard to chew.

a few weeks ago we were putting in a rainbox at work(sort of like a septic system but for rainwater off the roof- its stupid i know but county code requires it now) and about a foot underground we hit a honeybee hive or something. Just hundreds of friendly honeybees. That was about the weirdest thing we've found underground in a long time. Other than that they have been few and far between.

I lost about 50% this year, from the reading I've done this is'nt the first time this has happened. The first time it was documented was in 1872 and it has happened other times over the years(can't remember how many times),but was described the same way with bee's just disappearing.I think this came from the University of Maryland, they seem to be leaning toward a single cell fungus that eventually disappears by itself.Time will tell.

Bees are scarce in PA. Many beekeepers have lost 75% to 100% of their colonies. The beekeeper that has hives on my farm lost about 75%. He has spent over $5000 this year for new queens and colonies. He has no bees on our farm now but says I'll have bees when I need them. Most important crops for me needing bees are vines (cucumbers, squash, pumpkins). We still have bumble bees and squash bees. I've heard many theories on what has caused the die off of colonies ,,, cell phones, insectides (Admire, Provado esp), and a virus. The Verora mite problem has been around for a while and my beekeeper thinks that the virus theory makes the most sense since the mites weaken colonies making them more susceptable to viral infections. I just hope that a solution is discovered soon.

Aloha, The bee mites could be the cause. They found some bee mites over here in Honolulu and it could wipe out the colony.

Here in southern MN, the bee fellow brought 24 hives to my sis' place again, he was a week late, I was wondering if he got hit too, but good to go.

I guess a free hive formed in town under a parking lot, freaked people out - town people you know. So some are still out there.

Just got back from a drive thru the Yakima Valley today. Seattle to Walla Walla and back. This time of year the windshield is usually plastered with bees. Today I counted nine. Lots of bugs and smaller smears but not many honeybees. Have only seen two or three in our garden when there are usually dozens.Did not see any in the apple trees in our yard when they were blooming this year either and they are usually covered. But something pollenated the apple trees. So there is hope!

I have seen exactly one bee this spring and it was a very unusual situation. I was sitting on the seed wagon , eating my lunch with the planter book, open on my lap. I was reading the book while eating, when a bee landed on the page. She acted very strange like she was confused. She circled around 3 times inj a counterclockwise direction She then stopped and wiped off all the yellow pollen with her vtwo front feet. The pollen was easily visible on her face. She then flew off. I didn't think to save the pollen.
This is a very serious situation and there are lots of theories about what is causing bee hive collapse disorder, including cell phone radiation being the most prominent to date. Odd thing was I was sitting within a hundred yards of a cell phone tower at the time.

Seen a few but not like years ago. Guess something is killing them off which is bad news in the long run.

Nary a few round my place. I found a hive in the woods and left a note for the owner. He called and said he did not have enough to set out at my place.

He is struggling now as one queen died/left etc. and the remaining hive is collapsing. Said queens are in high demand this time of yr. and he may SOL.

There must be some about because 'maters are coming on good as is squash but I sure ain't seeing normal bee activity.

Hard to say for sure, but with all the fruit trees around here that blossum here from Mid april to the end of May, usually they are buzzing and humming when you stand next to one, also the dandelion were everywhere, I've only seen a few honeybees, matter of opinion, but it sure seems they are few and far between around here, perfect conditions for all the blossums, we shall see this fall.
