The price of gas / Diesel. People keep talking about the SUV people. I had a 1993 Honda civic 5 spd that got 45 mpg but was no rocket on the highway. I am a careful x truck driver that is a defensive driver that does not tailgate. After 3 near death experience with SUF and big trucks on super highway wile commuting for factory job. I traded my Honda and a 1989 Ford F350 4x4 dump in on a 1999 F350 4X4 diesel 6 spd single rear wheel pick up that gets a around 21 mpg .I save on insurance and registration by doing this. Do I need it yes and no . I feel much safer driving it around with all of the cell phone texting speeding northeast traffic of the people going on 4 hours of sleep trying to keep up with the Jones and hold on to their mcmansion. Could I get something smaller to drive yes but will I no .One of my pleasers’ in life is old iron and shows and when I can not do that what’s left. My next truck will be a vintage Peat or Autocar or Mack with QQ plates. I will not pay 40 or 50 K for another Ford PSD and the BS to register it correctly in the great state of PA to pull my gooseneck. My point here is there are a ton of people who had small cars and got rid of them as I did for their own safety.

I fully agree with you. My wife and I both drive early-90"s Suburbans, built like tanks. We have 3 young sons and I feel that protecting their lives is worth a whole lot more than getting 45 mpg in a rice buggy. Paying a few thousand more each year in gasoline to drive a structurally-sound vehicle is a good form of life insurance as far as I"m concerned. You"re right about all of the distracted drivers on the road fiddling with their cell phones and sound systems. It"s just a matter of time before a distracted driver plows into us again, so why risk our lives driving around in little death traps?

By the way NE Puller 1, there was an Autocar tandem axle with a rare sleeper cab from the late 1950s in our local Truck Trader a few years ago. They wanted a couple thousand for it and it was in good running condition. I should have bought it, but it needed all 10 new tires, and I didn't want to think about what that would cost! Are there any Diamond Reos around? I grew up not too far from where they were built.

Don't know the stats but in the salvage yards what I see are crunched and rolled SUV's and trucks. If a honda is there usually it's a blown air bag costing more than the car's worth. Your safer in the honda.

My dad was hit head on by a man in a car going about 50 mph. It completely destroyed the guys little jap car and crippled him for life. Dad was in his 1998 F-250 diesel and him or mom either was hurt. It did knock the whole front axle out from under his truck, bit did not total it. My wife fell asleep and hit a van it also knocked the front axle out from under my 1996 F-350 diesel it totaled the new mini van and I bought a new set of springs, fixed the radiator and fixed mine. The wife walked away without a scratch. I will take my chances in the power stroke diesel. BTW it gets 20-21 MPGs as well.

True in a head on bulk wins. Agility avoids single car wrecks. You simply keep it under control on ice and dicey situations.

That is interesting Circus, because about 3/4 of the Local single car wrecks are the small Agile cars you speak of.Most have very serious injures too.

Your probably right. After the fuels gone we'll all be walking looking for food anyway.
