I cant get the axle nut off my Dodge Ram to change the U-joints. Should I heat them to loosen them up?

You said you couldn"t get the axle shaft nuts off, so I assume you"re working on the 4x4 front axle, trying to remove the hub. When I replaced my hubs, I ended up using a 1" dr. impact gun, and that had trouble! When the nut did finally come off, it took all the threads off the axle with it. I got a new axle from Drivetrain Specialities of Las Vegas for less than a $100. Without a 1" gun, you"ll probably have to heat it, but that"ll most likely destroy the seals in hub.

A good 1/2" impact wrench will make quick work of that! If the 1/2" WON'T do the job, grab the 3/4"!

The yoke nut should unscrew after the joint is apart. I always use new nuts as they have a nylon or such material for the locking method and is a one way trip cheap insurance against coming loose. So heating is fine .just don"t get the yoke red hot .I"ve even had to cut them off.
