John PA suburb

I know this isn't the appropriate forum for this topic but the Kountry Life forum seems to be down and I'm hoping someone here can help. I have a nice vegetable garden going at my house in suburbia and have found that a groundhog has taken up residence in my woodpile. I spend the weekdays away working on getting my farmhouse in upstate PA ready to move into. I haven't been able to trap him and haven't been able to get a good shot at him yet. I'm afraid I'll come home one of these weeks to no more garden. Anyone know of a groundhog repellant that works? Something to keep him away from the garden until I can eliminate him one way or the other. It just seems to be the one groundhog, they're fairly scarce around here and so far he hasn't found the garden. Any sage advice much appreciated.

We have ground hogs under our shed out behind the house and the best time to shot them is in the early morning. they sneak out and think your not up and we leave the window cranked open and shot from the upstairs window. works every time! now , the first thing i do when i get up is look out the window to caught him eating!! There were about 4 of them living under there and i think we finally got them all but one BIG one! She's next! Tomorrow morning!!

Dad would give a quarter for each dead ground hog in the 50's. Used steel trap at the den entrance. Every once in a while I would trap a stripped kitty. Made for some interesting moves and no pay on skunks. Live trap and cat food work on many critters. KTC chicken and live trap and you can't keep the racoons out of it.

Get a dog.

I've got a similar dilemma, yet I'm the same guy who posted about the one I had eating out of my hand, friendly little neighbor, some cool stories, and memories but I think he passed, was a neat little feller, but yes I sure did not appreciate sharing my tomatoes with him. He used to get them just before I would want to pick em. I fenced off the garden with used cyclone fence, he then went around it, never got in the garden again. Only the chipmunks dug under it, placed rocks at the bottom, they soon gave up too. Probably won't bother the plants hard to say for sure, but when they fruit, might be a different story. I till, plant and put the fence fabric back up, posts always stay up, not too much work to do it every year, then the critters can't get in, nice when you are away too. My buddy passed, but another one took his place, I really try not to shoot em but if he digs under the fence, unlike the other one, I'll grit my teeth and get rid of him. I put barriers up around the flowers too, the deer really do the most damage here, all that green to eat acres and acres, yet they have to get your decorative flowers and such, at night when you sleep, they decimated my unfenced garden one year.

Use radiatior fluid in a dish. Be sure the family dog or a little kid wont lick it up.

I am told that they will eat fruit-flavored bubble gum. Just unwrap several pieces and leave it in available spots. Supposedly it will not pass through their digestive system and things get stopped up. I do not have proof that this works.

Heard this works but never had to try it. Punch a bunch of deep holes in an apple with a big nail. Soak it in antifreeze overnight, then push it under the pallet so dogs can't get to it. When you start to smell him he's history. :>)

A good dog in the garden is a good thing..
also human hair... or "OTHER" human discards

we have had groundhog problems in our river leavees and have been very happy with our DNR's putting Coyotees in our area... and we have guys wanting to shoot them???? on our land...

In an area surrounded by a river the groundhog is more of a problem to us than the "PRETTY BIRDS and Rabbits" are a blessing -- I dont hunt anyway... AND IT IS MY ISLAND not the people that keep wanting to shoot my coyotees.

Take an old electric radio and put it in a trash
barrel laying on its" side set to 24 hour talk.
The talking keeps animals away and the barrel
keeps the radio out of the weather.

Steel traps in the entrances work for me. Catch 'em, shoot 'em, and take them loose from the trap and shove 'em in the hole.

There's no holes guys. I guess this must be an upscale groundhog. He lives in my firewood piles. He darts into them through the lift slots of the pallets they're sitting on. When I poke at him from under the pallets he disappears up into the pile. Amazing the spaces these fat f*cking pieces of sh*t can crawl into.

There are some. They may be under the wood piles. Look for a smooth, well used pathway. Put a trap on the path at a well worn entrance to the wood pile.

Find both or all three holes in the set. Push a plastic 1 gallon jug down into all but 1 hole, and fill and tamp well around it. Get some rodent exterminating flares from your local farm store. Light 1, roll it into the hole as deep as you can, and fill the hole as you did the other(s). It would be helpful to know that the hog was in his hole beforehand, so get your supplies on hand and when you see him going home, work your plan. The milk jugs make it real hard for him to dig out before the sulfur fumes get him!

Put a plastic bottle over the end of a .22 rifle and bang, lower noise and dead varmits. Maybe a no ground hog sign in big letters.

I don't have any problem shooting. No noise abatement required. I just need to get a good shot at him during the little time that I'm here. So far that hasn't happened and like I said, I'd surely be pissed to come home some day to no garden.
