Calling Jdemaris or anyone else that has changed a 6.5 diesel in a 94 chevy pu. Son's 6.5 broke a rod. We pulled the old engine and would like to have some tips on putting the new one in. Standard trans and 4x4, as tight as it was to get out I can't imagine putting the new one in. Had to take the motor mounts off the frame to get out. Pan hits the axle. Do we need to drop the front axle? I don't want any problems when we start.

I haven't had the engine out of mine, but have had it stripped from the transfercase to the bare end of the crank and block. Drop all the clutching and gearing and it won't be much more than a straight lift then. Should also be a lot easier to handle.

The T case is light, nothing to it, but that 5 speed is a heavy sucker.

I imagine when the dealer does it they break it apart at the bell housing and leave the tranny in place. It can surely be done, but I bet its hard to stab in those cramped quarters.

Allan we have the radiator out but not the ac condenser, was trying to save it because it is tight and cold sys. Had a jack on the trans to take out and jacked up as much as I thought we could. They couldn't pay me enough to work on these things for a living. Should we be able to have the motor mounts on the frame? The next time something happens, it goes to the fence row. Will send some pics of the rod when we get done. Looks like it broke just above the crank end. Put holes all the way around the pan. Can't believe it broke there. Crusing along at 55. No warning. 160,000 mi.

The only "new body style" independent front axle Chevy truck I've changed engines in - was a 89. All the Chevy diesels I'm driving are old body style, solid front axle - 1982-1989.
I assume your's is the new body style with a serpentine belt drive on the 6.5? As Allan alluded to, you need to tip the engine up in front and let the trans/transfercase drop down in the rear. You might have to unbolt or loosen the rear mounts and remove the rear driveshaft, etc. I didn't have any trouble with the one I did, but I also removed the radiator - didn't want to take a chance of poking a hole through it.

MF,

Have you a floor jack under the transmission?

That running gear needs to be pushed up against the floor just as tight as you can get it.

Allan
