Why do people always come up with this stuff? Most tractors with shared sumps by trans, hydrolic, diff, final planataries, etc rqguire a very good additive package to make things like wet brakes work smoothly, ep additives for the trans/diff, etc. Straight vegatable oil would be the quickest way to run up huge repair bills. You can do many changes of the correct lubricants for the price of a wet brake job. Tom

I agree that it would be completely disaterous for a multi-system shared oil tractor. But what about for straight rear end oil? Is this still bologna?

I wouldn't want it in a rear end either. There's a lot of extreme pressure additives in the oil that provide the protection. This is not the oil of 50 years ago, and there's a lot more to it than simple viscosity. I'd leave it alone and use a good modern oil.

We use straight veg oil in the hydraulic systems of our excavators that work in very sensitive aquatic environments. Bridges, stream restorations, in stream works etc. Its the hyd hoses that blow or tear and when they do with veg oil, its more aesthetically pleasing that its veg oil not AH 68! Thats what we do with it, it works in that application.
