Mornin' All,

Have something like 75 acres of alfalfa on the ground and had every intention of raking hay this morning.

However, the weatherman is saying we are in for high winds for the next three days. 20 to 30 mph winds.

Dunno, think I'd better just walk away leave the stuff lay for a few days 'cause I'm afraid as light as this crop is, if I rake it, it might end up over in the next county. :>(

I see my neighbor cut his hay yesterday but I'm still waiting the seeds are to small for me i like them about to pop out but still hanging on the grass good enough to cut rake and bale without loosing to much. makes better hay that way.But you have to be fast or you can loose the seed in the field.

I supposed about a week or so for me to start mowing.

Seeing those pictures of hay down in the neighboring state is weird. We are still trying to get beans in the groud in between rain showers. The rain we are getting is enough to keep us out of the field, but not enough to make anything grow. We haven't even pulled our hay equipment out of the shed yet, plus I really need to get the 560 done that I'm working that has to be done by the 20th of June for the WHO Tractor Ride. Well good luck w/ your hay crop, our is actually looking pretty decent considering the spring we have had. -Dan

Okay,

Gonna head out to the country to thread that baler with some of that expensive twine.

Bought 16 rolls yesterday and it came to just this side of $300. That kind of takes the fun out of it. :>(

What size were those 6500 or 9600 our balers use the 9600 its a little cheaper by the ft. that way.

Allan, Is your wife the tractor driving type? You could get her to run the rakes and you could follow right behind with the baler. Could even hook one of those air conditioned cab tractors up for her to ride in comfort.

I don't touch her sewing machine and she better stay away from my stuff! :>)

However, I've got a neighbor who really needs some tractor time. Wonder if I can get him to crawl out of bed at 2am? :>)

Wind or no wind if you rake it a worel wind will go across the field before you can bale it. How do you like that old 495 by now, I always pulled mine in low 4 with my 756 D and I could lay down 27 acres in 4 hrs. Raked with a left and right took 2 hrs pulling them with my 460D at 900 rpm"s in 4th. 460 would use a whole 1/2 gal an hr raking.

Yes Sir,

I do it the same darned way.

I really need to get that left rear tire filled with fluid 'cause the header isn't "floating" quite right without it.

Other than that, it's a maniac when it comes to cutting hay. Sure wish it were another four feet wider tho. :>(

I drug this one out of the dead letter file and put a new set of guards and sickel on it. Lubed and oiled it and it has done nothing but "run" for the last two years.

Seems to "sing" the best at about 5 1/2 mph.

We got a junk yard special too- it's in better shape than most other machines on our farm, all it needed was new cutting parts like yours and if I remember it correctly, you're the one who recommended sickleservice.com- All in all, we've invested $1200 ($600 from the srcapper ansd $600 for the parts)in it. Works great and today I knocked down about 35 acres of hay, putting 6 hours on the tach and about 1/2 tank or so of fuel through the Massey 285 (Sorry, just had to throw that in there....:-)

LOL!

I'd take the rain! A good inch of rain on that downed hay wouldn't bother me one little bit. :>)

Mowing hay usually brings it on. Timing has a lot to do with the sucess of a rain dance.

Okay, that's the plan then.

I'm gonna go out there, mow that last 35 acres and just set back and wait for the rains. :>)

We had good rains this spring up until early May. Since then it's been trying to get dry on us. :(

Wish I could trade you some of that wind for a little rain. We've had 3" of rain since Thursday and there is a chance as far out as the forcasters will give us a guess. We had winds like that for most of last week when we were trying to spray corn but now when we need them to dry things out it's calm as can be. We have about 50 acres of hay up so far and it's averaging just under half a ton per acre, last year we had over 600 round bales off our first cutting and this year we are hoping we can get 250 off a few more acres.

Hi Allen, Can you bale the hay the way it is or are the rows too light? If you can even though it will take longer it will not be anymore travel distance than cutting. If the wind blows the bales to next county you can hauk them back.

Hmmm,

That's an option I guess. After 3 days of wind, it darned sure ought to be cured out.

Lots and lots of drivin' with those little 12' windrows tho. Was hoping to pull two together to be able to fill the baler better.

Thanks, we'll see how this plays out depending on the weather.

If you bale it without raking it I would guess your bales would be heavier because you would be getting more revolutions per pound of hay.

This is where you get your wife out there raking the hay, and you bale RIGHT behind. Kind of like swathing peas. Don't tell her where you got the idea.
