Just purchased a mid '70's Case 580 backhoe. The tractor runs great, but is AWFUL slow digging. Someone told me that I can increase the hydraulic pressure from the pump to speed up the hoe - not sure if that is true. If so is this simple - Any ideas?? thanks. Seth

Your pump is probably not putting out what it should. If you can get a pressure gauge, T it in to one of your hoses and bottom out that cylinder(s) to get a reading. I don't have a service book to give you the right pressure but it should be around 2000 psi. My wife's BIL had a 580B and it was a little weak. So when I was using it to dig up some stumps, the main line that fed the backhoe broke from being old and rotten blew all of the oil out. After replacing the hose, instead of putting Hy-trans back in the tank like BIL had being using, I use medium hydraulic oil. There was a mark improvement in performance. I could hang the backhoe bucket under a stump and pull the entire machine up with just the outriggers on the ground

Even if all up to snuff, these were pretty slow. Used to get complaints at the rental store I was at that had these. The manual shows a cycle time...how long each cylinder takes end to end. find that and you'll have an idea where you're at.

we've got a 580b with a lever valve on the floor on the right side of the seat if youre facing back that is some type of porportioning valve. I'll have to look in the manual to be sure. Do you have this?

Turning up pressure does not increase speed. GPM (gallons per minutes) out put determines speed. If your pump is original it is probably worn. With engine idling and loader bucket on the ground can you lift up the back end of the tractor with the backhoe bucket extended about 6 to 8 feet behind?

I tried to do what you told me and the tractor will only pick up the back end when the rpm gets up around 1000 - even then she lifts kind of slow. The tractor idles slow at about 500rmp but even at 750rpm it made no attempt to lift up. What should the operating rpm be for this tractor? When it idles up with the hand control I only get about 1800rpm out of it. If I dig and hold the foot feed down to around 2200rpm as you can guess things get a little better but still leaves lots to be desired.
